Stinson worked six innings Tuesday night for Norfolk, making him more available than other candidates on the Tides’ pitching staff. He skipped his bullpen session yesterday under instructions from the Orioles, who anticipated that he would be needed this weekend.
They had no idea, however, that reliever Francisco Rodriguez would strain his right groin in the eighth inning last night. He isn’t expected to go on the disabled list unless he shows up at Camden Yards today and can barely walk, but the Orioles will need to back off him.
Stinson is 7-5 with a 3.75 ERA in 21 starts for Norfolk. He’s allowed two runs in his last three starts covering 18 1/3 innings, and has permitted two runs or fewer in six of his last seven outings.
Stinson made one start for the Orioles this season, allowing five runs – including four home runs – and five hits in 5 2/3 innings in a 6-5 loss to the Blue Jays on April 24 at Camden Yards.
Assuming that Stinson’s arrival constitutes the only roster move today, the Orioles will temporarily play with a short bench.
