Súarez ready to rejoin Orioles after weekend

SAN FRANCISCO – The Orioles are expected to add more than two players on Monday when rosters can expand to 28.

Pitcher Tyler Wells and infielder/outfielder Jorge Mateo practically are confirmed, and reliever Albert Suárez probably will join the team in San Diego, as well.

Súarez made his fifth appearance on his rehab assignment last night and fourth with Triple-A Norfolk, tossing 1 2/3 scoreless innings with a hit and strikeout at Gwinnett.

“I think he’ll need a couple days after the outing, today and tomorrow, which lines it up for most likely Monday, given that he feels good,” said interim manager Tony Mansolino.

“Two innings, two days. Monday kind of lines up. He’s got to feel good, though.”

Suárez has made one appearance with the Orioles on March 28 in Toronto, allowing one earned run and two total with five hits in 2 2/3 innings. He complained of soreness in his right shoulder and was diagnosed with a subscapularis strain.

Having a third player reinstated from the 60-day injured list will require a batch of counter moves – one for the active roster because it doesn’t expand to 29 and two for the 40-man roster.

Reliever Matt Bowman cleared unconditional waivers today and the Orioles released him.

Reliever Cody Poteet (right shoulder) was returned from his rehab assignment, reinstated from the 60-day injured list and outrighted to Norfolk.

Catcher Caden Bodine has a bruised finger on his left hand and won’t play again this season.

The Orioles made Bodine their second draft pick this year and the 30th overall out of Coastal Carolina. He was 14-for-43 (.326) with a .408 on-base percentage in 11 games before going on Single-A Delmarva’s seven-day injured list.

The season will run out before Bodine is ready.

Jackson Holliday is the first Oriole to draw at least one walk and score at least one run in four straight road games since Pedro Álvarez in May 2018. Brian Roberts was the last to do it in five straight in 2004.

Jeremiah Jackson has 26 hits in his first 21 career games, the seventh Oriole to accomplish the feat, along with Bob Hale in 1955, Ryan Mountcastle in 2020, Hyun Soo Kim in 2016, Joey Rickard in 2016, Curtis Goodwin in 1995 and Billy Ripken in 1987.

Gunnar Henderson leads the Orioles outright in every major counting stat: hits (133), doubles (30), triples (five), home runs (16), RBIs (59), runs (75), walks (49) and stolen bases (20). Only three American League players have done it: Carlos Beltran (2002), Bob Johnson (1939) and Babe Ruth (1923).
