MacPhail told the crowd that the Orioles have interest in bringing back Kevin Millwood, saying the idea hasn’t been ruled out “by any stretch,” but the hindrance in signing any of the remaining free-agent starters is the club’s inability to promise them a spot in the rotation.
MacPhail is reluctant to tell one of these veterans that he’ll get the ball every fifth day. But yes, Millwood remains a possibility.
When a fan asked Showalter whether he’s given any thought to making Jim Johnson a starter again, the manager replied, “Have you been talking to Jim Palmer?”
The club has discussed moving Johnson into the rotation, but Showalter talked about the risk in “robbing Peter to pay Paul.” Showalter wouldn’t say that it’s out of the realm of possibility, but it sounds like the Orioles prefer to keep Johnson in the bullpen.
MacPhail confirmed that he’s been negotiating with the representative for free agent designated hitter Vladimir Guerrero – no big news there – and still doesn’t know whether those talks will lead to a signing. He did say that Luke Scott would move to left field if Guerrero is added to the roster.
