Two starting pitchers dueled to keep the game scoreless into the late innings, and it stayed that way until a leadoff walk hurt the Orioles in the top of the ninth.

Leonys Martin’s RBI single in the top of the ninth produced the game’s first run and Rougned Odor added a second run-scoring base hit in the frame as Texas beat the Orioles 2-0 at Camden Yards to take three of four in this series.

After he pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth, Chaz Roe started the ninth with a walk of Shin-Soo Choo, who moved to second on an Elvis Andrus sac bunt. He then scored on Martin’s single and his 24th RBI broke the 0-0 deadlock. Odor’s hit made it 2-0.

Pitching on three days’ rest and making just his second big league start of the year, the Orioles could not have asked right-hander Kevin Gausman to do much more tonight.

gausman-pitching-white-sidebar.pngWith help from Darren O’Day, who pitched out a jam in the top of the seventh, Gausman pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings on four hits. He walked two and matched his career high with seven strikeouts. In the fourth, he struck out Adrian Beltre, Josh Hamilton and Choo consecutively after a leadoff single. Gausman lowered his ERA to 3.09.

He was replaced by O’Day after allowing a one-out single and walk in the seventh. O’Day then got the next two batters out; American League hitters are just 3-for-25 this year against O’Day with runners in scoring position.

The Rangers straded the bases loaded in the eighth after a two-out rally against Brian Matusz and a two-out error on Manny Machado. But Roe got Josh Hamilton to fly out, and the game remained 0-0 at that point.

Yovani Gallardo had another excellent start for Texas. He pitched six scoreless innings of two-hit ball, extending his scoreless-innings streak to 29 1/3 innings. In eight starts since May 24, he is 4-0 with an ERA of 0.88. The O’s left the bases loaded against him when he fanned Chris Davis to end the third.

The Orioles fall to 42-37 and end this homestand at 4-3. This was their first series loss since dropping three of four at Houston June 1-4. They were 7-0-1 the previous eight series. The Orioles were shut out for the fifth time.

The Orioles begin a six-game road trip on Friday night against the White Sox in Chicago. Ubaldo Jimenez (7-3, 3.09 ERA) faces left-hander John Danks (3-8, 5.38 ERA).
