The Orioles scored a run for Kevin Millwood in the first inning after Julio Lugo reached on Jerry Hairston’s throwing error, stole third base and raced home on Nick Markakis’ fly ball.

Interim manager Juan Samuel told reporters that outfielder Felix Pie, rehabbing a torn muscle in his back, will begin an injury rehab assignment in the minors on Tuesday.

Double-A Bowie left-hander Zach Britton shut out Harrisburg on two hits over six innings.

Triple-A Norfolk…Let’s start with the good:

Triple-A Norfolk third baseman Josh Bell hit his eighth home run, and Nolan Reimold is 1-for-3 with a double, bumping up his average to .210.

Now the bad:

Adam Jones flied out after back-to-back two-out singles by Ty Wigginton and Luke Scott.

The Orioles botched a rundown in the bottom of the first that allowed the Padres to load the bases with two outs. Will Venable walked to force in a run and Hairston singled in two more to give San Diego a 3-1 lead.

The Orioles pretty much could have picked which base to record the final out before Venable batted, and they chose “none of the above.”

Millwood threw 32 pitches in the first, the last 14 after his defense extended the inning. He should have been in the dugout with a 1-0 lead and a lighter work load, but the Orioles reacted to the rundown like they’ve never seen one.

“Every day, there’s something new,” MASN play-by-play man Gary Thorne said. “You wait every day to see what’s next.”

I recommend keeping one hand over your eyes.

Update: Going back to the good, the Orioles scored twice in the third to tie the game, 3-3. Doubles by Lugo and Markakis produced one run and reminded us that extra-base hits aren’t illegal, and Scott singled with two outs.
