They are several reasons to do this. In the case of some players, like outfielder Trent Mummey, who will report early, he was hurt and missed a lot of last year and could use some extra work.

In the case of some pitchers, like Bobby Bundy, they could potentially be used in one of the early major league exhibition games to pitch an inning. Before you say the Orioles already have enough pitchers, consider the fact that on March 5 the Orioles have two games, with split squads taking on the Rays and Pirates. Couple that with a game the next day and the O’s will need 27 pitchers throwing one inning each just for those three games over the first two days.

Manny Machado and Jonathan Schoop are expected to attend that early camp, which will not be held with the major league players at Ed Smith Stadium, but at the Twin Lakes Park complex.

Several catchers will be needed for both camps and Caleb Joseph and Gabriel Lino will also likely be in Sarasota for that on the 23rd. Carlos Rojas will also report early.
