FOXSports reported earlier this week that the Orioles contacted the Texas Rangers regarding pitcher Kevin Millwood. Talks weren't considered serious, according to one source. The Rangers are looking to unload Millwood's $12 million salary for next season. I don't anticipate that the Orioles will be the team absorbing it, but there's nothing wrong with engaging in early discussions before the Winter Meetings, just to get a better feel for the situation. The Rangers could use a center fielder, plus rotation and bullpen help. They need a right-handed power bat. I hear that they're probably going to "ask for the moon," as it was described to me by someone who is close to the team. Do you want Millwood? You'll notice the 26 home runs allowed this season, though they're attached to a 3.67 ERA in 31 starts. The Rangers contacted president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail in September regarding third baseman Melvin Mora, but those talks didn't go far. Also, FOXSports is reporting that the Atlanta Braves reached a preliminary agreement with Type A free agent Billy Wagner on a one-year, $7 million contract with a $6.5 million option that vests if he finishes 50 games. You can cross him off the Orioles' closer list. By this time next year, we'll forget that he was ever on it.
