The Orioles will activate pitcher Chris Jakubauskas from the disabled list and option him to Triple-A Norfolk, improving their rotation depth at the upper levels of their minor league system.
Jakubauskas made an injury rehab start yesterday for the Tides, allowing one run and three hits with one walk and two strikeouts, in 1 1/3 innings. Alfredo Simon will start Thursday at Double-A Bowie. He threw 64 pitches Saturday in an extended spring training game, facing 19 batters and not allowing a run.
Simon remains on the restricted list, which keeps him off the 40-man roster. The Orioles eventually will need to make room for him. They’d have to pass him through waivers before sending him back down to the minors.
Newly acquired catcher John Hester is starting tonight for Norfolk, which will be opposed by Louisville’s Dontrelle Willis.
Josh Bell continues to serve as the designated hitter after being sidelined briefly with a sore left knee.
Update: Never mind. The Norfolk-Louisville game was postponed because of rain.
Wynn Pelzer is starting for Bowie tonight. He’s sporting a 0.90 ERA.
I figured his time in the rotation would be limited, but maybe not.
Pelzer came to the Orioles last summer from the Padres in the Miguel Tejada trade. He figured to be a late-inning reliever…but maybe not.
