I’m packing my laptop with all the winter meeting necessities, and I just found an old notepad that contains enough clean pages to be useful. As I was flipping through it, I discovered some questions that I had scribbled down for one of the Orioles’ new acquisitions.

I probably have a few queries left over for Jerome Walton.

Despite tweets – and I can’t believe I’m typing this word – that the Orioles are close to signing Pedro Feliz, I wouldn’t suggest that you hold your breath until it happens. You could end up blue in the face, or worse.

He absolutely is a prime candidate to play third base in Baltimore next season, but that doesn’t mean the Orioles will be going to the podium in Indianapolis to announce it. Or sending out a release before the plane takes off.

I guess we need to define “close.”

I’d like to see the Orioles react aggressively, but they tend to take a “let the market play out” approach, especially when it comes to guys like Feliz. As I wrote earlier this week, they don’t see a big difference between him and other candidates. And I’m not including Adrian Beltre, who wants too many years and too much money. He never made sense to me.

This approach won’t sit well with most fans. They don’t want this team to leave Indy without filling at least one need. Laying the groundwork is fine at the general manager meetings. Getting a name on a contract should be the goal next week.

And hey, let’s make it a good one, too.

It won’t be Erik Bedard or Carlos Delgado.

Bedard’s health is still an issue. We don’t know when he’ll be ready to pitch after undergoing a second shoulder surgery. This needs to be determined. And the Orioles want to scout Delgado in Puerto Rico.

Congratulations go out to Ken Young, owner of the Triple-A Norfolk Tides and Double-A Bowie Baysox, and president of the Single-A Frederick Keys, who was named Minor League Executive of the Year by Baseball America. Young also owns the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes and Harry Grove Stadium Concessionaire Ovations Food Services.
