masn-baseballs-orioles.jpgIt’s only been a few weeks since Orioles fans found out George Sherrill would become a Los Angeles Dodger in exchange for third baseman Josh Bell and right-handed pitcher Steve Johnson, the son of former Oriole and current MASN color analyst Dave Johnson.

But those weeks have been fast and furious for the young men involved.

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to be an athlete involved in a trade, here’s a brief glimpse into some of the steps in the transition process that…It’s only been a few weeks since Orioles fans found out George Sherrill would become a Los Angeles Dodger in exchange for third baseman Josh Bell and right-handed pitcher Steve Johnson, the son of former Oriole and current MASN color analyst Dave Johnson.

But those weeks have been fast and furious for the young men involved.

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to be an athlete involved in a trade, here’s a brief glimpse into some of the steps in the transition process that brought Steve Johnson back to his home state. (Courtesy of an email update from Dave Johnson.)

  1. Sent from San Bernardino, CA to Chattanooga, TN
  2. Met the Chattanooga team on the road in Raleigh, NC and spent two days there
  3. Made the 10-hour bus trip back to Chattanooga and spent six days there
  4. Took another 10-hour bus ride back to Raleigh to pitch against the Carolina Mudcats
  5. Three days later, he was traded to the Orioles and put on a plane to Chattanooga to collect his personal belongings
  6. Flew to New Britain, CT the following day to meet his new team, the Bowie Baysox
  7. Arrived at the ballpark at 8:30 p.m., just as the second game of a doubleheader had ended
  8. Got on the team bus to head back to the team hotel where he signed paperwork until about 1:30 a.m.
  9. Got up at 8:00 a.m. the following day for a physical
  10. Made his first appearance on the mound for the Baysox at 1:30 p.m. that afternoon…in the rain
  11. A two-hour rain delay limited his first outing to 4 ½ innings, during which he allowed 1 run and was saddled with the loss
  12. Got on another bus right after the game to head to Manchester, NH
  13. Made his next start in Fenway Park where he struggled with his command in the first inning, righted himself in time to strike out the side in order to avoid trouble, pitched 5 innings, allowed 2 runs and struck out 7 in what would be a no-decision for the young right-hander
  14. Received another no-decision in his first home start with Bowie in pitching 6 innings, allowing 1 run, and striking out 5

According to Dave Johnson, Steve will likely get four more starts this season and is scheduled to make his next start for the Baysox in Akron this Thursday.
