Tromp goes on injured list, Orioles recall Carlson and select Stallings contract

ARLINGTON, Texas – The Orioles have made another series of roster moves because it’s 2025.

Catcher Chadwick Tromp went on the injured list today with a lower back strain and Jacob Stallings had his contract selected from Triple-A Norfolk. Outfielder Dylan Carlson was recalled and infielder Emmanuel Rivera was designated for assignment.

Tromp left last night’s game in the third after injuring his back on a swing. He’s 3-for-16 with a double and home run with the Orioles.

Adley Rutschman (oblique) and Maverick Handley (concussion) also are on the injured list, and the Orioles signed Stallings a week ago to provide depth. He’s spent parts of six seasons with the Pirates, two with the Marlins and two with the Rockies and is a career .143/.217/.179 hitter in 561 games.

Stallings, 35, went 4-for-10 with two RBIs in three games with Norfolk. He’s wearing No. 25.

Carlson hit .241/.278/.389 in 40 games before the Orioles optioned him again. Rivera hit .229/.299/.271 in 26 games.

Rivera could decline an outright assignment if he clears waivers but likely would accept it again.

Ramón Laureano probably stays in the lineup tonight against the Rangers, with his hot streak raising his line to .287/.358/.538 in 57 games. He’s 12-for-24 in his last six.

Laureano is 18-for-37 (.486) in his last 11 games against the Rangers.

Gary Sánchez has posted a 1.061 OPS and 17.0 strikeout rate since leaving the injured list, compared to a .300 OPS and 34.3 strikeout percentage before his wrist inflammation. He batted .354/.415/.646 (17-for-48) with two doubles, four home runs and 18 RBIs in June.

The Orioles went 16-11 in June. A win tonight would move them nine games below .500 for the first time since June 20.

Brandon Young makes his fourth major league start after the Orioles recalled him yesterday. Charlie Morton is moved to Friday with mild elbow tendinitis.

Young faced the Rangers at Camden Yards and allowed four runs and five hits in four innings. Josh Jung hit a two-run homer. Two-time Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom countered with seven hitless innings and he’s on the mound again tonight.

Colton Cowser singled in the eighth for the Orioles’ only hit.

deGrom was 4-0 with a 1.41 ERA and 0.719 WHIP in June.

deGrom is holding both left-handed (.239) and right-handed (.235) hitters to a sub-.250 on-base percentage this season.

Perhaps the teams can avoid using pitchers to bat. They were the first last night to do it in the same game since the designated hitter was implemented in 1973. The Rangers used Jack Leiter as a pinch-hitter last night.

The Rangers tied a club record by playing in their fourth consecutive extra-inning game.

Texas has lost six of its last seven home games, while the Orioles have won 10 of their last 16 on the road.

Ryan O’Hearn leads Ben Rice at designated hitter in Phase 2 voting for the All-Star Game and Jackson Holliday is second to Gleyber Torres at second base. The results will be announced Wednesday evening.

Reliever Kyle Tyler cleared waivers and was outrighted to Norfolk.
