masn-baseballs-orioles.jpgI guess back on opening day, we would have been pleased with an Orioles’ 6-5 start. But it doesn’t seem as promising when it follows a 6-1 start and your team just suffered a blown lead at Yankee Stadium.

Last night on my postgame radio show, “Baltimore Baseball Tonight” on 105.7 the Fan in Baltimore, it was pretty much a two-hour vent session. By the end, the fans got some things off their chests, but the O’s had still blown the game in New York.

It was disappointing because Jake…I guess back on opening day, we would have been pleased with an Orioles’ 6-5 start. But it doesn’t seem as promising when it follows a 6-1 start and your team just suffered a blown lead at Yankee Stadium.

It was disappointing because Jake Arrieta gave his club a much-needed solid start. He was excellent early on, not allowing a hit through four innings and needing just 48 pitches to get the first 12 outs. Arrieta now has a career ERA of 3.93 versus the Yankees over three starts and probably should be 3-0 against them.

It was disappointing because it looked like Kevin Gregg threw a pitch that Jorge Posada could handle leading off the last of the ninth. It appeared that Matt Wieters wanted the pitch on the outside corner and it found the inside of the plate. Many of the callers last night were already calling for Koji Uehara to be the closer on this team.

It was disappointing because the O’s bullpen issued leadoff walks in the seventh and 10th and both came around to score. The ‘pen allowed three runs over 3 2/3 in losing the lead and game.

The O’s did some things right, but again lost in New York, and have dropped 20 of their last 24 games there.

The frustration level is high.

Still, there is a 6-5 start to build on and the O’s two best starters so far, Zach Britton and Jeremy Guthrie, are pitching the next two games. Time for the O’s to try to put that blown lead in New York quickly in the rear-view mirror.

They’ll see the Yankees again next weekend in Baltimore.

During the four-game losing streak:
* The Orioles have been outscored by a 29-10 margin.
* The team batting average is .212 and the Birds are just 3-for-21 with runners in scoring position.
* The team ERA is 7.32 and the O’s have allowed eight homers.
* The starting pitchers’ ERA is 9.53 with 18 earned runs over 17 innings.

So, as a fan, are you looking at the big picture here and are somewhat or mostly satisfied with a 6-5 start or are you upset that a 6-1 record has turned into 6-5 at this point?
