If Diamondbacks executive Jerry Dipoto is chosen as Andy MacPhail’s replacement, a possible hire as scouting director could be Indians national crosschecker Chuck Ricci.

If the name sounds familiar, the Orioles drafted Ricci in the fourth round in 1987 out of Shawnee (N.J.) High School. He pitched for parts of three seasons with the Single-A Frederick Keys, and in 1993 with the Double-A Bowie Baysox.

Ricci has been the Indians’ national crosschecker since 2005. Dipoto holds him in high regard.

Fun fact: Though Ricci never pitched for the Indians, he appeared in “Major League II.” That’s almost the same thing.

If Blue Jays assistant general manager Tony LaCava is chosen as MacPhail’s replacement, a possible hire as scouting director could be Toronto national crosschecker Marc Tramuta.

The connection between LaCava and Tramuta is obvious. They’re in the same organization. LaCava holds him in high regard. It’s easy to connect the dots.

Tramuta also has ties to the Orioles. He scouted the mid-Atlantic region for them under former scouting director Tony DeMacio.

Also, even if Mike Bordick doesn’t join Showalter’s staff, his role could change next season.

Bordick currently serves as the Orioles’ coordinator of offensive fundamentals. He recently spent some time in Sarasota working with the infielders in the fall instructional league. In my book, that also makes him a coordinator of defensive fundamentals, but you won’t find it on his business card.

Anyway, Bordick could replace Graham as coordinator of minor league instruction. He would be one candidate.

Bordick could still spend sufficient time with his family, rather than being on the road for prolonged stretches. And the Orioles – you guessed it – hold him in high regard.
