Doctors are studying the imaging done on reliever Yennier Cano’s right hamstring and the Orioles are waiting to learn more about the degree of his injury.
Cano exited last night’s game with the bases loaded and no outs in the eighth inning after experiencing tightness in the hamstring. He was walking in the clubhouse afterward without any traces of a pronounced limp.
“Right now it seems encouraging,” said manager Craig Albernaz. “We’re kind of in a holding pattern, kind of see what our doctors say.”
The only roster move at this point is Cameron Weston having his contract selected from Triple-A Norfolk, with the Orioles optioning starter Trey Gibson to fortify their bullpen. They had seven relievers available last night, and that number could hold if Cano is day-to-day.
Weston, 25, was an eighth-round draft pick in 2022 out of the University of Michigan. He’s posted a 3.98 ERA in 85 minor league games, including 54 starts.
The 2026 season has been a grind for Weston, who’s registered a 6.26 ERA and 1.683 WHIP in 11 appearances (seven starts). He’s averaged 6.3 walks and 13.2 strikeouts per nine innings.
Weston tossed five scoreless innings with two walks and eight strikeouts in two exhibition games.
“I enjoyed watching him pitch in spring training,” Albernaz said. “Kind of a funky look from the right, little lower slot. He can spin it really well. The track record, not this year but previously, was a little erratic, not in the strike zone, but the strike quality’s been better and he’s been tough on righties just because of his arm slot and his fastball, sinker and the sweeper. So pumped that he’s here and excited for him.”
Dean Kremer hasn’t pitched since April 18 due to a right quadriceps strain. He’s on a rehabilitation and throwing progression, with no return to play timeline.
“He’s making progress and I hope we get to see him at some point,” Albernaz said. “Obviously, I think we all have experience with the rehab processes and how that goes and if there’s hiccups or not, but right now Dean’s trending in the right direction.”
Jackson Holliday is starting at second base tonight against Blue Jays left-hander Patrick Corbin. Coby Mayo is at third base.
Blaze Alexander is in left field after hitting his first home run last night and finishing with a career-high six RBIs. He’s slashing .339/.373/.482 with five extra-base hits and 13 RBIs in 22 games this month.
The .339 average ranks sixth in the majors among players with a minimum 50 at-bats.
Asked whether he’d like to keep Alexander in the lineup, Albernaz said. “Yeah, I think when any player is playing well, you want to keep them in the lineup.”
“With Blaze right now, he’s feeling really good right now at the plate. He’s made a lot of great adjustments. He’s been working his tail off, but also is calling card is being able to play anywhere. And so for us, it’s making sure when you play a multitude of positions at a high level that Blaze does, it takes a little bit of a toll on your body. So we want to make sure that’s the biggest thing, how his body’s recovery, where he’s at. So getting him days, and also, he’s such a weapon off the bench, as well, because it allows us to match up in so many different ways with the positions he can cover.
“That’s why Blaze is a really valuable piece to what we do, just because of the versatility he brings and just the baseball player he is. But right now, yeah, he’s playing extremely well, hitting the ball well, running the bases outstanding. It’s really tough to keep him out of the lineup.”
