Updating Rutschman and Basallo, Mayo in tonight's Orioles lineup

Catcher Adley Rutschman began his injury rehab assignment this afternoon with Triple-A Norfolk and went 1-for-3 with a double and walk at Lehigh Valley.

Rutschman, who served as the designated hitter, hasn’t played for the Orioles since June 19 because of a strained left oblique. Interim manager Tony Mansolino told the assembled media in Cleveland that Rutschman will catch for the Tides on Wednesday and could be reinstated this weekend.

Samuel Basallo, the top prospect in the organization, remains out of the lineup with a sore oblique. He didn’t play over the weekend, but is beginning a hitting progression and could return this weekend.

Basallo, who turns 21 next month, is batting .264/.383/.591 with 11 doubles, 19 home runs and 48 RBIs in 62 games.

Catcher Chadwick Tromp, on the injured list with a lower back strain, had his rehab assignment transferred to High-A Aberdeen.

Another loss last night in Cleveland, when the Orioles led 3-0 in the top of the first inning and 5-3 in the third, left them 11 games below .500 again.

Rookie Brandon Young makes his seventh major league start. He’s 0-4 with a 7.52 ERA and 1.785 WHIP in 26 1/3 innings.

Young held the Mets to two runs in 5 1/3 innings on July 8, but the Marlins burned him for seven runs and nine hits in 4 1/3 before the break. They smacked four home runs.

Young has walked 12.8 percent of left-handed batters faced this season, compared to 2.3 percent of right-handers.

Coby Mayo gets the start at first base. Ryan O’Hearn and Tyler O’Neill are out of the lineup.

Jordan Westburg is the designated hitter. Jacob Stallings is catching.

Guardians left-hander Joey Cantillo has posted a 4.17 ERA and 1.439 WHIP in 24 games, with only three starts – all of them coming this month.

Cantillo tossed 3 1/3 scoreless innings with two hits allowed against the Cubs at Wrigley Field, gave up three runs and struck out seven batters in four innings in Houston, and surrendered four runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 against the White Sox in Chicago. He hasn’t pitched at home since May 26, before the Guardians optioned him in order to stretch him out to start.

Cantillo made eight starts among nine appearances as a rookie last season. The Orioles scored three runs in four innings against him on Aug. 3. in Cleveland.

Right-handers hit .221/.298/.396 against him and left-handers hit .292/.364/.539.

Cedric Mullins homered in his only at-bat against Cantillo.

José Ramírez, who hit a game-tying three-run homer last night in the first inning, is slugging over .500 from both sides of the plate.
