Jason Garcia struck out five batters over two scoreless innings today while starting for Peoria in the Arizona Fall League.
Garcia allowed one hit and walked a batter in the Javelinas’ 9-7 loss to Salt River. He threw 23 of his 39 pitches for strikes.
Though he made the start today, Garcia will enter spring training next year as a reliever. The Orioles want him to continue developing in that role.

Garcia posted a 2.18 ERA in 13 appearances in the second half, with five earned runs allowed in 16 innings, after registering a 5.93 ERA in the first half.
“I’m real proud of the progress of Jason Garcia this year,” manager Buck Showalter said late in the season. “He’s really started to grasp some things other than pitching. Dom (Chiti) and Wally (Dave Wallace) have done a good job with him. It’s nice to know he’s going to be with our organization next year with options.”
Mike Yastrzemski, who homered in Peroria’s first game, added a double, two RBIs, a walk and a run scored today. He also was hit by a pitch.
A scout from another organization watched Yastrzemski at Double-A Bowie this season and said the young outfielder is “loaded with intangibles.”
“He does so many things that can help a team win,” the scout added. “He’s a ballplayer.”
Peoria’s lineup also included catcher Chance Sisco, who went 0-for-4 with a walk, and Adrian Marin, who went 1-for-5 with a double while serving as the designated hitter.
