In the sixth inning of tonight’s game against the Boston Red Sox, Vladimir Guerrero singled off Josh Beckett for his 2,587th career hit, moving him past Julio Franco and into first place as the all-time leader in hits by a Dominican-born player. Guerrero’s 2,587 hits have come over 16 seasons in the major leagues with the Montreal Expos (1996-2003), Los Angeles Angels (2004-09), Texas Rangers (2010) and Orioles.
Entering tonight’s game, Guerrero was second among Dominican-born players in career batting average (.318) and also ranked in the top three among Dominican-born major leaguers in doubles (second, 476), runs (third, 1,326), RBIs (third, 1,495) and slugging percentage (third, .553).
In addition, Guerrero’s next home run will be the 450th of his career, making him the 35th player in major league history to reach that number. The only Dominican-born players with more home runs are Sammy Sosa(609) and MANNY Ramirez (555).
The Orioles will honor Guerrero’s accomplishment in a ceremony before their final game of the season this Wednesday, Sept. 28. Longtime major league manager and Guerrero mentor Felipe Alou , along with Dominican Republic Ambassador to the United States Anibal De Castro , will participate.
