Nelson Cruz followed with a double to center field, bringing Yankees manager Joe Girardi out of the dugout and scattered boos from the remnants of an announced crowd of 35,864.
Make that 19 hits for the Orioles. They hadn’t scored 13 runs since June 19, 2013.
Wieters also extended his hitting streak to eight games dating back to Sept. 28.
Josh Stinson has tossed two scoreless innings today. The Orioles bullpen has allowed seven earned runs in 24 innings this season.
Update: Steve Lombardozzi greeted reliever Dellin Betances with a run-scoring single for the Orioles’ 20th hit and a 14-4 lead. Flaherty is the only starter without an RBI.
The Orioles hadn’t scored 14 runs in a game since Aug. 10, 2010. They hadn’t produced 20 or more hits since May 10, 2011.
Update II: Darren O’Day worked a scoreless ninth and the Orioles defeated the Yankees 14-5.
Alfonso Soriano doubled off O’Day with two outs. Kelly Johnson homered off Brian Matusz in the eighth.
The Orioles are 3-5 heading into Wednesday night’s series finale. Miguel Gonzalez opposes Masahiro Tanaka.
