While waiting to determine the severity of first baseman Chris Davis’ oblique injury, the Orioles decided to recall Jemile Weeks from Triple-A Norfolk to provide infield depth.

Weeks is capable of backing up at second base while Ryan Flaherty starts at first in Davis’ absence.

The choice really came down to Weeks and David Adams, as I wrote late last night. Weeks is batting .296/.451/.481 with four doubles, three triples and seven RBIs in 72 plate appearances with Norfolk. He’s also drawn 16 walks and is 4-for-5 in stolen base attempts.

Weeks left a game for Norfolk earlier this week after becoming dehydrated. He was starting in left field, increasing his versatility and value to the Orioles.

The Orioles summoned Weeks to New York earlier this month and immediately returned him to Norfolk without recalling him. He was insurance in case outfielder David Lough, bothered again by concussion-like symptoms, went on the disabled list. But Lough passed his concussion test and returned to the team.

Last night, the Orioles optioned left-hander T.J. McFarland to Norfolk after he worked three innings in a 5-0 loss to the Royals. Weeks is the corresponding roster move, which returns the Orioles to a 12-man pitching staff.

FOXSports.com first confirmed that Weeks, acquired from the Athletics for closer Jim Johnson, was being recalled.
