SAN DIEGO - Before the Orioles could hand Tyler Wells the ball tonight, they had to reinstate him from the 60-day injured list and do some roster maneuvering.
They also returned infielder/outfielder Jorge Mateo from his rehab assignment and reinstated him from the 60-day IL, a little earlier than they indicated yesterday. He’s also back.
Catcher Maverick Handley was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk after spending one day with the team. Pitchers Corbin Martin and Elvin Rodríguez were designated for assignment. Martin was with the Orioles, and his exit frees up another spot on the 28-man roster.
The 40-man roster is full.
Mateo hasn’t played in the majors since June 6 due to elbow and hamstring injuries. He’s batting .180/.231/.279 with 14 steals in 15 attempts over 31 games.
Martin recorded two saves but posted a 6.00 ERA and 1.722 WHIP in 17 appearances. He had a 1.23 ERA and 0.955 WHIP in seven July games and a 9.28 ERA and 2.250 WHIP in 10 August appearances.
Rodríguez got into one game with the Orioles this season and allowed a pair of solo home runs in one inning.
Wells is making his first start since April 12, 2024. He’s never faced the Padres.
Luis Arraez had three hits last night to give him 1,000 in his career and he’s 2-for-5 against Wells.
The Rockies claimed reliever Roansy Contreras on waivers today from the Orioles, who designated him for assignment after he threw 4 1/3 scoreless innings against the Red Sox.
More minor league news: first baseman/outfielder Ryan Noda (right hand contusion) is being placed on Norfolk’s seven-day injured list, right-hander Michael Forret (left hamstring strain) is being placed on Double-A Chesapeake’s seven-day IL, and right-hander Keeler Morfe (finger blister) is being placed on Class-A Delmarva’s seven-day IL.
Right-hander Yu Darvish is making his 11th start for the Padres and has posted a 5.66 ERA. His season didn’t begin until July 7.
Darvish made two starts last month with one run allowed in six innings and he tossed seven scoreless on July 30. He’s 0-2 with a 4.73 ERA in two career starts against the Orioles.
Gunnar Henderson is 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs against Darvish. Dylan Carlson is 1-for-8.
Darvish is holding opponents to a .153 average and has a 2.95 ERA at home. Opponents are hitting .262 in his road starts and he’s carrying a 7.86 ERA.
Fernando Tatis Jr., who was scratched from last night’s lineup, is hitting .331 against fastballs but .298 against breaking balls and .194 against off-speed pitches.
