Westburg, Castillo added to Orioles' active roster (plus lineups)
CHICAGO – Jordan Westburg is ready to play again for the Orioles, who reinstated him from the 10-day injured list earlier today. He’s serving as the designated hitter for tonight’s game against the White Sox.
Westburg’s last appearance came on Aug. 18 in Boston. He’s been out with a right ankle sprain.
The injured list is back down to 10 players.
Infielder Emmanuel Rivera was designated for assignment to make room for Westburg. He’s hit .250/.291/.283 in 42 games.
The 40-man roster has 39 players.
Left-hander José Castillo was claimed on waivers yesterday from the Mariners and activated today. The Orioles optioned left-hander Grant Wolfram to Triple-A Norfolk after he registered a 4.85 ERA and 1.769 WHIP in 20 appearances.
Castillo will wear No. 66 and become the 69th player used by the Orioles this season, one short of the record set by the Marlins last year.
Dean Kremer starts tonight after having one turn skipped due to some discomfort in his right forearm. Unlike many of his teammates, he was able to avoid going on the injured list and is appearing in his 29th game tonight.
Kremer faced the White Sox on May 31 and held them to one run in six innings. He’s made three career starts against them and allowed two runs and 19 hits in 17 2/3 innings. He tossed 5 2/3 scoreless innings in his only game at Rate Field.
Lenyn Sosa is 2-for-5 with a home run against Kremer. Mike Tauchman is 3-for-8 with a double and homer.
Left-handed hitters are batting .195 against Kremer since the All-Star break after posting a .286 average in the first half.
Coby Mayo is slugging .741 when ahead in the count this season, compared to .211 when he’s behind.
A loss tonight officially eliminates the Orioles from the third Wild Card.
White Sox rookie right-hander Shane Smith has posted a 3.78 ERA and 1.183 WHIP in 26 starts. He hasn’t allowed a run in three of his last six outings, including seven scoreless innings with one hit against the Royals on Aug. 25.
Right-handers are hitting .196/.294/.292 against Smith, and left-handers are hitting .224/.313/.414. Right-handers have posted a .081 average since the break.
Orioles Hall of Famer Melvin Mora will be the guest splasher for Sunday’s game against the Yankees at Camden Yards.
