It’s too bad that Madison Bumgarner didn’t have the same effect on Brad Bergesen.

The All-Star break didn’t last long enough for Bergesen, who has allowed 17 earned runs and 28 hits in 16 1/3 innings since play resumed. He’s lost five consecutive starts and hasn’t won since May 12.

Zach Britton is scheduled to start tonight for Triple-A Norfolk. If he’s scratched or removed after a few innings, that most likely means he’s taking Bergesen’s turn Saturday in Kansas City.

Bergesen could be headed back to the minors. The bullpen’s another option, though the Orioles would have to make room.

I’ve run out of suggestions.

I understand the logic in letting these young guys continue to pitch in the majors and, hopefully, figure things out, since there isn’t much else to gain in 2010. And making them ride the Norfolk shuttle over and over doesn’t seem to do any good. But Bergesen looked lost out there last night. His expression said as much after the Jays built the 8-0 lead.

I felt sorry for him and kept waiting for a referee to step in front of him and wave off the Jays.

What should the Orioles do with him?

I pondered my own question while taking a short drive and wondered if the Orioles should reconsider the idea of a six-man rotation. Interim manager Juan Samuel keeps saying that it hasn’t been discussed, but Britton would fit into it until reaching his innings limit and Bergesen could avoid another trip to the International League.

It’s quite possible that Kevin Millwood will be traded at some point this summer, perhaps after the non-waiver deadline – would you claim him? – and the rotation would be reduced to the usual number. But in the meantime…

Maybe I haven’t run out of suggestions – just ones that I’m certain will provide a solution.
