Meanwhile, Brian Matusz ended his season with a flourish last night, pitching two-hit ball over six innings in a 2-1 win over the Tigers where the clubs combined for just six hits.
Matusz, who went 6-0, 1.57 over his last eight starts, said he had some of his best stuff of the year last night.
“Yeah, today I had really good stuff. My change-up was inconsistent at times, but when it was on, it was real effective for me. I was throwing two seamers, four seamers, pretty much where I wanted to and moving the ball in and out. It was a lot of fun, pitching with the stuff I had today.”
Matusz finished the year making 32 starts and pitching 175 2/3 innings. Last year between the minors and big leagues, he pitched a total of 157 2/3 and he was pleased to be able to increase his innings.
“That’s a lot of innings, a lot more than I’ve thrown in any other year. To be able to throw that many innings and still be healthy, couldn’t be any happier going into the off season. Being healthy and knowing I’ve thrown that many innings this year,” Matusz said.
