The next roster move for the Orioles is expected to happen Wednesday morning with Dean Kremer’s reinstatement from the 60-day injured list. Kremer would start that day against the White Sox to close out the series.
Of course, surprise injuries tend to crop up around here. Did anyone expect reliever Keegan Akin to go on the 15-day IL last night with elbow soreness? News like this just comes out of nowhere.
The decision on Kremer isn’t confirmed but it seems likely after he threw a bullpen session yesterday at Camden Yards. Kremer made two rehab starts with Triple-A Norfolk, just as Cade Povich did with Double-A Chesapeake before the Orioles reinstated him from the IL.
That seems to be the magic number.
The only difference is that the Orioles optioned Povich to Norfolk. Kremer should be able to avoid another demotion.
Manager Craig Albernaz confirmed that Kremer was one of the pitchers under consideration. The Orioles are off Thursday and Trevor Rogers could get pushed back to Friday.
Kremer started twice for the Orioles before straining his right quadriceps during a workout day. He began the season with Norfolk after becoming a late and shocking camp cut.
Trey Gibson is starting tonight and could get bumped from the roster unless the Orioles move him to the bullpen. They probably won’t go with six starters at this point in the season, but never make assumptions with this club.
A spot must be created on the 40-man roster, and the Orioles could transfer starter Chris Bassitt to the 60-day injured list after his back procedure if they anticipate a lengthy absence. He had a bone spur removed in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
“He’s feeling great, he’s acting great,” president of baseball operations Mike Elias said on Saturday. “He’s in there walking around. You wouldn’t know anything happened. So it’s a pretty minor procedure and we’ll see where he’s at in a couple weeks and see like if and when he can start throwing, but we’re feeling pretty good about things right there and I think there’s still a very strong possibility we get him back and we get him back in better condition before the end of the season.”
The Orioles also could choose to DFA one of their recent acquisitions, a baseball move as common as a pickoff throw.
Here’s the current 40-man roster:

The Orioles claimed Zulueta on waivers Sunday from the Cubs, a day after claiming Keegan from the Rays.
The active roster has featured multiple sets of position numbers – two or three catchers, four or five outfielders, five or six infielders.
Jeremiah Jackson was optioned Sunday for two primary reasons: He wasn’t playing much with Jackson Holliday healthy and Blaze Alexander swinging a hot bat since the beginning of May, and the team wanted a third catcher with Adley Rutschman fresh off the concussion injured list.
Jackson was in the May 30 lineup and disappeared from it until June 14. He was absent again till the 19th. Consecutive starts finally came because of Holliday’s groin tightness.
Keeping Chadwick Tromp is insurance in case Rutschman experiences any other concussion symptoms, which you may recall happened to Heston Kjerstad. Or if Samuel Basallo suffers an injury or is bothered again by discomfort in his left wrist.
Albernaz had Rutschman behind the plate last night and Basallo serving as designated hitter. Basallo started at first base Sunday for the first time this season while Rutschman caught. That Tromp insurance also applies to having the other catchers in the lineup at the same time.
The Orioles signed Tromp on June 10 after the Braves designated him for assignment. He appeared in six games with the club last summer, counted among the franchise-record seven catchers used. He also couldn’t avoid an injury, forced on the IL with a lower-back strain.
“It’s weird, finding where you’re gonna fit,” said Tromp, who had two hits Saturday. “I think that’s been the main thing for me, finding an organization where I can fit in or just fit whatever they’re looking for. I went back to the Braves and obviously they DFA’d me, but as soon as they did, Baltimore called me right away.
“Through the offseason I kind of went over last year and I felt really good here. I felt really good with the guys, the teammates. They’re awesome. And I think they see something in me that they appreciate. They know how hard I work and what I bring to the table, also, and I try to make people better, try to make our pitchers better. Just like giving them a really solid game plan. But yeah, being here again is awesome.
“I do feel like we can play better baseball and then we have a lot of young and hungry guys. We’ve just got to put it together. That’s all.”
Jackson is a popular player in the clubhouse. One teammate expressed his disappointment in the roster move and said, “He doesn’t deserve that.”
He’s right. But it happens in this business. Kremer didn’t deserve to be optioned at the end of spring training. Tyler Wells was sent down earlier this season. Jackson will be back.
