The key inning was the sixth. The key moment was a ground ball to first base and a decision that didn’t prevent the Yankees from scoring the go-ahead run.
Let’s review:
The Yankees knotted the game at 2-2 on Robinson Cano’s bouncing single to right field, the ball clearing Ty Wigginton’s head at first base. Alex Rodriguez hustled to third, putting runners on the corners with no outs and causing Orioles starter Chris Tillman to lean more heavily on the ropes.

Jorge Posada followed with a grounder to Wigginton, who checked Rodriguez before throwing to second for the force. Cesar Izturis’ return throw sailed past Wigginton as Rodriguez raced home.
Did Wigginton make the right decision, or should he have stepped on first base for the out and held Rodriguez?
“What Wigginton did, once he received the ball, he looked at A-Rod and A-Rod stopped, so when he threw to second base, A-Rod kept coming. But I think he did the right thing. He checked the runner,” interim manager Juan Samuel said.
“The ideal thing was probably to see Izturis come home with it. He probably would have had a shot there. But I think Wigginton did the right thing.”
Due to a scoring change, Tillman is charged with two earned runs. The ball that Mark Teixeira hit to Julio Lugo to lead off the sixth, originally ruled an error, was scored a hit after the game.
Down on the farm, Dennis Sarfate registered his sixth save for Triple-A Norfolk. Tim Bascom will make his International League debut tomorrow night, replacing Jake Arrieta in the Tides’ rotation.
If you’ll recall, Bascom was drafted one round ahead of Arrieta in 2007.
