Need to know: Suk-min Yoon made his debut today and tossed a scoreless seventh inning after allowing a leadoff single. He told reporters that he needs about 20 days to get into midseason form. The Orioles plan on optioning him to Triple-A Norfolk, and they can bring him up later in the season. He’s too far behind right now.

SARASOTA, Fla. – The Yankees put runners on second and third with no outs in the top of the eighth, but Darren O’Day struck out the next three batters to preserve a 2-1 lead.

Suk-min Yoon retired three straight batters in his debut with the Orioles after a leadoff single by Ramon Flores. His fastball topped out at 91 mph on the Ed Smith Stadium radar gun.

yoon-throwing-spring-training-sidebar.jpg“Overall, I gave up the hit. My control was better than expected, but I also feel like my fastball was 2 mph faster than I expected,” Yoon said through interepreter Justin Yoo.

“I knew I’d be nervous, but I pitched nine years in Korea, so overall I wasn’t as nervous as I thought I’d be.

“I waited a long time to throw, so overall I’m relieved. I’ve been working hard for this day to come.”

Yoon also threw his changeup, slider and curveball. He admitted to being “amped up” when he first stepped on the mound in the seventh inning.

“I honestly thought I was going to throw about 88,” he said, “but once I saw the 91, I felt good.”

The Orioles are expected to option Yoon to Triple-A Norfolk and provide him more time to get ready for the season and acclimated to life in the U.S.

“I’s going to take about 20 days, but the whole timing is different from Korea, so it’s going to take about 20 days to get to midseason form,” he said.

Today’s attendance: 8,602, the third sellout this season.

Update: Evan Meek pitched a scoreless ninth to help the Orioles finish off the Yankees 2-1.
