Going back to Sarasota, manager Dave Trembley said he was "real encouraged" by what he saw from starter Brad Bergesen.
"Things are really coming together for him," Trembley said. "It was a good lineup for him to face, a predominately left-handed lineup. We got him out there for the fifth inning. That was really encouraging for him."
Asked how close Bergesen is to catching up with the other starters, Trembley replied, "I think he's knocking on the door right now."
Bergesen made the necessary adjustment once he started rushing his delivery.
"Especially with men on base, he has a tendency to be somewhat too quick to the plate," Trembley said. "(Matt) Wieters did a nice job with him today."
Trembley repeated that Mike Gonzalez will pitch in Clearwater tomorrow.
Hitting coach Terry Crowley told Trembley that Brian Roberts was "very good" during today's hitting session.
