More FanFest notes and quotes
Another FanFest has come and gone. It was a fun day with around 9,000 fans, slightly fewer than last year, attending at the Baltimore Convention Center. FanFest always gets you ready for another season after a day of talking baseball and talking with Orioles players, coaches and front office staff. Over the next week or two, I'l continue to post some interviews, quotes and stories from the day. For today, here are some quotes from FanFest. Dan Duquette on his fan forum and meeting fans: ...

Orioles' international efforts return to Korea

Orioles' international efforts return to Korea
While addressing fans during this morning's forum for season ticket holders, executive vice president Dan Duquette causally mentioned that the Orioles signed the top amateur pitcher in Korea three days ago - a 17-year-old left-hander who wasn't identified by name. I stored the information in the back of my mind - the front was much too crowded - until I was freed up to do more research. I had no time today with all the FanFest commitments and constant blog updates. Coincidentally, a tweet...

Johnson expects to be in bullpen in 2012

Johnson expects to be in bullpen in 2012
Jim Johnson shook hands with reporters, smiled and said, "I don't know." Hey, we're supposed to ask the questions before you answer them. Johnson knew what was coming. Is he going to be a starter or reliever this season? "You guys probably know more than I do," he said. "I'll be in the bullpen. I'm pretty sure about that." As the closer? "We'll figure that out in the spring," he replied. The Orioles are leaning toward keeping Johnson in a relief role, and he could be the...

Brady Anderson is back where he wants to be

Brady Anderson is back where he wants to be
Brady Anderson was officially hired this week as special assistant to Dan Duquette, even though he has been doing some work for the club before that and did some work for the Orioles last year. "Last year, I had a condo at Triple-A (in Norfolk). You need to go everywhere. We have minor league affiliates close to Baltimore and you have to be willing to grind it out and go back to the minors. I like being in the trenches," he said. "I was around (the big league club) quite a bit last year...

A few more notes from FanFest

A few more notes from FanFest
Jai Miller bears a striking resemblance to Jets receiver Plaxico Burress. OK, they're not separated at birth, but they could be related. It's been a relaxing winter for shortstop J.J. Hardy, who usually sat at home wondering where he'd be playing the following season. "It was one of the first offseasons in the last three or four offseasons where I wasn't in all the trade rumors and stuff," he said. "It was nice to know where I was going to be in spring training." Hardy isn't...

Arrieta progressing nicely after surgery

Arrieta progressing nicely after surgery
Orioles right-hander Jake Arrieta said at FanFest that he continues to make very good progress after having bone spurs removed from his right elbow on Aug. 12. "I felt as good as I expected to. I haven't had any setbacks, just routine throwing program soreness but outside of that I've been 100 percent healthy and very encouraged with my progress," he said. Arrieta, who went 10-8 with an ERA of 5.05 in 22 starts last summer, said the bone spurs would bother him at times last season. He...

Jones on trade and contract talks

Jones on trade and contract talks
Orioles center fielder Adam Jones knew when he saw reporters today that someone would ask him about all the trade talk in which his name has surfaced in recent weeks. "I knew that question was coming. No one has ever talked to me about it, so I think, rumors are what they are. Leave it at that, nothing more I can say about it," Jones said. Jones was asked if he was open to discussing a contract extension if the Orioles approach him this winter. Adam Jones addresses his contract situation...

Markakis: "I'll be ready for opening day"

Markakis: "I'll be ready for opening day"
Nick Markakis said he'll probably be limited until maybe the first week into March after undergoing surgery earlier this month to repair a torn abdominal muscle. He doesn't need many at-bats to get ready for the season. He's not going to rush or do anything that sets him back. His body will largely dictate his schedule. So far, it's cooperating with him. "I'm feeling good," he said. "It's a sensitive area where I got cut open and as far as pain-wise, I don't have any pain. It's...

A few words from Bergesen and Reimold

A few words from Bergesen and Reimold
Pitcher Brad Bergesen is sporting a beard that actually looks good on him. Neatly trimmed. Doesn't look like he just staggered out of the woods after an eight-month hibernation. Bergesen said he'll prepare in spring training as if he's going to be a starter, though his role is undefined. "I've had a great winter with my son and just watching him develop and he's healthy, so it's just been flying by this offseason, but I've been preparing as usual," he said. "I switched things up a...

A few words from Duquette

A few words from Duquette
The players keep filtering into the backstage area at FanFest. I click off my recorder, turn my back and someone else is waiting to be interviewed. Orioles executive vice president Dan Duquette finished his forum with manager Buck Showalter that was reserved for season-ticket holders. He didn't quiet the Prince Fielder speculation when he said, "Are we going to get him? I don't know. But if we don't, we'll look for someone just like him." Showalter said he just wants the chance to...

Showalter and Duquette on rotation, Dominican, Machado, Reimold and Fielder

Showalter and Duquette on rotation, Dominican, Machado, Reimold and Fielder
The first fan forum of the day at FanFest is over. Manager Buck Showalter and Orioles executive vice president Dan Duquette were on the main stage. They addressed several topics and here are some of their answers. Showalter on the battle for rotation spots this year: "Last year, it was last man standing. Now, it's about the competition and that always brings out the best in people. Last year, we had six or seven guys competing and this year we have 11 or 12, and if you know anything about...

O's announce changes to FanFest autograph lineup

Most of the changes were necessitated by the fact that previously scheduled participants Brian Roberts, Josh Bell, Kyle Hudson and Bill Swaggerty are unable to attend FanFest. At ESSKAY Autograph Station 1, Pedro Strop and Joe Mahoney have replaced Bell and Swaggerty for the 11:20 a.m. session. At ESSKAY Autograph Station 2, fans can get signatures...

New O's coach Wayne Kirby can't wait to get started
If you want to meet someone that is almost bubbling over with excitement for the new Orioles season, check out new first base coach Wayne Kirby. Kirby is the only member of the new O's staff that has never coached in the majors, but he can't wait to get started. "I have a lot of passion for this game," Kirby said. "I bring energy every day and kids feed off that. If I'm dead, (a player) may be. I'll bring it every day and they might have to tell me to shut up." Kirby. who will also...

Healthy Bergesen optimistic about 2011 season

Healthy Bergesen optimistic about 2011 season
Brad Bergesen says he's been going online for the first time this winter to check on the Orioles' offseason moves. He laughed when I asked which sites he checks. I was serious, but anyway... Bergesen has joined the ranks of the excited. He's expecting much better results from the Orioles in 2011. "I've been paying attention because there's been so much activity," he said. "I'm on the computer almost every night, just doing a quick search, seeing if anything's new. Obviously, I...

Wieters aiming for offensive resurgence in 2011

Wieters aiming for offensive resurgence in 2011
Matt Wieters hopes to put up better numbers on offense this year, and when he analyzed his game after the 2010 season he came to the conclusion that he chased too many pitches last season. "It's consistency, getting pitches to hit and not chasing them out of the zone. In the minors, I prided myself on discipline at the plate and last year I got away from that a little bit, tried to do too much. You have to give yourself the best chance," he said. "I went out of the zone I am comfortable...
