A special FanFest "Mo-ment" and other notes

A special FanFest "Mo-ment" and other notes
Regular listeners to the Orioles' flagship radio station, 105.7 FM The Fan in Baltimore, certainly know the youngster's voice. They surely know his knowledge of and passion for Baltimore sports. And they are certainly familiar with that wonderful laugh. But a few hundred fans got to see and meet 11-year-old Mo in person on stage Saturday at FanFest. Everyone in the room cheered loudly when they saw the Orioles' Adam Jones come out to greet Mo. That is everyone but Mo, who is blind and had to...

Leftovers from FanFest

Leftovers from FanFest
There wasn't any real news to come out of yesterday's FanFest at the Baltimore Convention Center. A few injury updates, confirmation that the Orioles aren't engaged in contract extension talks, confirmation that executive vice president Dan Duquette made an offer to pitcher Vance Worley before the right-hander signed a minor league deal with the Nationals, Adam Jones' assertion that the club must improve its outfield defense. Jones made the point multiple times. He's got concerns about the...

Adam Jones calls for better defense in the outfield

Adam Jones calls for better defense in the outfield
Let Adam Jones play general manager and he's got strong opinions on where the Orioles need to improve in 2017. It isn't on the pitching staff, it isn't in the lineup, it isn't on the basepaths. "We don't need more power. I think that's prevalent. We don't need more offense. I think we need to improve the outfield defense," Jones said. "People want to say always pitching, pitching, pitching. I think we've got some (darn) good pitchers right now. They're young, but they're maturing....

Davis and O'Day in good health

Davis and O'Day in good health
Orioles first baseman Chris Davis said he started to swing a bat about a month ago and hasn't experienced any discomfort in his left hand. It's a sizable piece of good news in the offseason. Davis dislocated his left thumb early in the 2016 season and continued to play through the pain, batting .221/.332/.459 with 38 home runs and 84 RBIs. He led the majors with 219 strikeouts in the first year of his seven-year, $161 million deal. "It's good," he said. "I started hitting about a month...

Showalter on Bundy's innings, Tillman on his right shoulder

Showalter on Bundy's innings, Tillman on his right shoulder
Buck Showalter didn't sound like a big fan of innings limits today - at least one for young right-hander Dylan Bundy, who pitched 109 2/3 innings for the Orioles last season over 34 games that included 16 starts. Showalter answered, "Yes," when asked if Bundy has enough innings this year to pitch in the starting rotation for the entire season. "Anyone is going to put these exact acute numbers on everything," he said. "This one is going to feel this and at this (point) he'll feel that and...

Orioles still expect to take three players to arbitration hearings

Orioles still expect to take three players to arbitration hearings
Orioles executive vice president Dan Duquette indicated again today at FanFest that the club is prepared to go to arbitration hearings with pitchers Kevin Gausman and Brad Brach and catcher Caleb Joseph. "The club took the stance that if you file, there's a trial. We took file-to-trial this year," he said. "We were able to resolve six of the nine cases and it looks like we're going to have to go to arbitration with a couple of them, but we were prepared. We're not afraid of the process....

Wright's offseason focused on mental aspects of game

Wright's offseason focused on mental aspects of game
As he gets ready to head to another spring training and tries to make the Orioles' opening day roster, right-hander Mike Wright said today at FanFest he's worked more this winter on the mental aspects of the game than anything that has to do with a fastball or breaking ball. "Every year, you are trying to get better with your mechanics and with your pitches, but mainly I've been focusing on having a good mental approach to the season and I think I've done a pretty good job so far," he...

Mark Trumbo on one stat he'd like to improve

Mark Trumbo on one stat he'd like to improve
Did the ears of some Orioles fans perk up when Mark Trumbo spoke yesterday about improving his plate discipline? The Orioles' plate discipline and stats like team on-base percentage provide an ongoing discussion topic for fans every year it seems. They want more on-base percentage from their team and its lineup. I'm pretty sure Trumbo is not talking about making any dramatic changes. He is here to slug homers and many are expected. But for a player driven to always get better, it is something...

The Mancini decision: Has he graduated from the minors?

The Mancini decision: Has he graduated from the minors?
Among many questions the Orioles have to answer once spring training starts is just where first baseman Trey Mancini will be on opening day. Is he going to make the roster or head back to the minors again to start 2017? Until the Orioles re-signed Mark Trumbo, both vice president Dan Duquette and manager Buck Showalter expressed plenty of confidence in Mancini, and it looked like he could be the everyday designated hitter this season. But Trumbo's return likely changes that equation. So would...

No surprise: O's pass on Jose Bautista (plus other notes)

No surprise: O's pass on Jose Bautista (plus other notes)
In the end, just as expected, the Orioles did not sign Jose Bautista. He agreed to a new deal with the Toronto Blue Jays yesterday, one that will pay him $18 million for the 2017 season. Bautista will have a mutual option for the 2018 season and a vesting option for the 2019 season, according to Yahoo Sports. The maximum value of the deal, if it does last for three seasons, is reported to be $60 million. If Bautista has a big season in 2017, he can decline his side of the option and try to cash...

Orioles sign outfielder Logan Schafer (plus other notes)

Orioles sign outfielder Logan Schafer (plus other notes)
The Orioles acquired a left-handed hitting outfielder today as the Winter Meetings approach, though it involves a minor league deal. The club announced that it signed Logan Schafer, 30, to a minor league contract. He will receive an invitation to spring training. Schafer is a career .214/.292/.318 hitter in 318 games over parts of six major league seasons, the first five spent with the Brewers. He batted .238/.342/.317 this year in 26 games with the Twins. A former third-round pick, Schafer...

Matt Wieters on accepting the qualifying offer and more

Matt Wieters on accepting the qualifying offer and more
Todays' FanFest at the Convention Center attracted a crowd that eclipsed 11,500, according to a team official. I'll be dispensing quotes over the next few days, but here's a portion of Matt Wieters' interview, which leaned hard on his decision to take the $15.8 million qualifying offer. "If you asked me going into the offseason, I always hoped to be back and didn't know what the decision was going to be, and very grateful that I was able to make a decision seven days after the season and...

Hearing from Buck Showalter at FanFest

Hearing from Buck Showalter at FanFest
Orioles manager Buck Showalter isn't keeping close tabs on Chris Davis or his negotiations. He can't escape the questions, but he won't be consumed by them. "I don't dwell on it. I don't spend much time on it. I really don't," he said at today's FanFest. "We have been and will be competitive to a point. They've got to make a decision, how much is enough, and the game will move on without me, you, him and the Orioles. We'd like to have him, but we'll be fine either way. I know there...

Jonathan Schoop on his health, offseason and more at FanFest

Jonathan Schoop on his health, offseason and more at FanFest
Orioles second baseman Jonathan Schoop missed nearly three months last year with a sprained right knee, which sent him to the disabled list on April 18. Then he missed the last few games with a bruised right hand after getting hit by a pitch. In between, he played pretty well, and Schoop today pronounced himself healthy for the 2016 season. "Everything is perfect. Trying to work to get stronger," he said. He is also working to get better after hitting .279 with 15 homers, 39 RBIs and a .788...
