Chris Davis came out of tonight’s game against the Angels with a right knee injury after landing awkwardly on first base while trying to beat out a slow ground ball in the top of the fifth inning.
Davis immediately veered into foul territory, and he barely applied any pressure to his right leg. He was grimacing as he limped to the dugout, and Ryan Flaherty replaced him at first base in the bottom half of the inning.
This is Flaherty’s fourth major league inning at first base.

Davis immediately veered into foul territory, and he barely applied any pressure to his right leg. He was grimacing as he limped to the dugout, and Ryan Flaherty replaced him at first base in the bottom half of the inning.
This is Flaherty’s fourth major league inning at first base.
Steve Pearce is a backup first baseman, but he’s serving as the designated hitter tonight. Nolan Reimold has limited experience at first in the minors. This isn’t an ideal time to move him from left field.
Davis was 0-for-2 tonight and is batting .330. Yesterday, he was named the American League’s Player of the Month for April.
The Orioles have one hit in five innings, a single by J.J. Hardy in the fifth. Mike Trout just launched a two-out, two-run homer to center field to increase the Angels’ lead to 3-0 as the game moves to the top of the sixth. But Davis is a much bigger concern at the moment.
If the injury forces Davis on the disabled list, Travis Ishikawa has been playing first at Triple-A Norfolk. He had two hits and two RBIs tonight, but he’s batting only .235. He’s also not on the 40-man roster.
Danny Valencia, who hit a three-run homer tonight, would be another option. He’s batting .323 with four homers and 18 RBIs. Russ Canzler had two hits tonight and is batting .281.
Conor Jackson remains on the restricted list.
Update: Miguel Gonzalez was removed tonight after only six innings and 80 pitches because of a blister on his right thumb.
Gonzalez allowed three runs on a solo homer by Mark Trumbo and a two-run shot by Trout. He wasn’t given any margin for error with the Orioles’ bats going silent against left-hander Jason Vargas.
Gonzalez allowed six hits, walked none and struck out five.
It looked like a quick hook until the blister explanation, which was passed along by MASN’s Gary Thorne.
Trout’s RBI single off Troy Patton in the seventh extended the Angels’ lead to 4-0.
Update II: Vargas shut out the Orioles on three hits, including Nick Markakis’ double in the ninth inning.
Angels 4, Orioles 0.
Just a bad night all around, with Davis’ knee injury, Gonzalez’s blister and the dead bats.
