Scott McGregor and Bill Castro weren’t contacted about the pitching and bullpen coach openings. The Orioles chose Braves minor league pitching coordinator Dave Wallace for the former job, and he had a strong voice in the decision to hire Chiti, a Braves special assistant.

McGregor will return to his former role as pitching rehab coordinator in Sarasota, a position he’s held for the past two seasons. It’s the logical move.

McGregor was named bullpen coach Aug. 15, with Castro replacing Rick Adair as pitching coach. Adair took a personal leave of absence and is currently out of baseball.

Previously, McGregor served as pitching coach at short-season Single-A Aberdeen, Single-A Frederick and Double-A Bowie over a 12-year span. He was 138-108 with a 3.99 ERA in 13 major league seasons, all of them with the Orioles, and recorded the final out in the 1983 World Series.

Castro’s future is more unsettled, since his contract expired Oct. 31.

The Orioles don’t appear to have a spot for Castro, who was hired as bullpen coach in 2012 after 37 seasons in the Brewers organization as a pitcher, scout and coach. Their major league staff is full, including extra coach Einar Diaz, and there are no current openings in the minors.

The Orioles are in the process of replacing minor league infield instructor Matt Martin, but Castro isn’t suited for the job.

Update: I’m hearing that the Orioles want to retain Castro and believe there’s a spot for him. Look for him to remain in the organization.
