The rousing ovation was saved for the first batter he faced.

Johnson replaced Sonny Gray, who walked J.J. Hardy with one out in the sixth inning and the Orioles leading 4-1. His second pitch to David Lough, a 95 mph fastball, disappeared into the right field seats.

Lough’s other home run this season came against another former Oriole, Scott Feldman on June 1 in Houston.

Johnson saved 101 games for the Orioles over the past two seasons, but he lost the closer’s job in Oakland. Seeing him pitching in the sixth inning is just as strange as the green and gold uniform.

Johnson struck out Caleb Joseph for the second out, gave up a single to to Ryan Flaherty, walked Nick Markakis and retired Manny Machado on a fly ball.

Johnson has permitted four earned runs in 15 1/3 innings on the road.

Kevin Gausman escaped a monster jam in the fifth, striking out Josh Donaldson and Brandon Moss with runners on second and third and one out. The last pitch to Moss registered at 99 mph.

Gausman is back out for the seventh at 89 pitches.

Nelson Cruz is hitless in his last 11 at-bats with six strikeouts.

Tonight’s attendance: 44,202. The third sellout this season.

Update: Gausman allowed one run and four hits in seven innings, with one walk, six strikeouts and a home run. He threw 102 pitches, 67 for strikes.

Cruz doubled in the seventh to end that 0-for-11 skid.

Update II: Game over. The Orioles beat the A’s 6-3, with Darren O’Day recording the last five outs.

Gausman gets his fourth major league win and his first in 2014.

Brian Matusz was charged with two runs in the eighth, both scoring after O’Day replaced him with one out. O’Day struck out the last two batters he faced after Kyle Blanks’ two-run single.

The Orioles are 31-29 heading into Sunday’s series finale.
