Orioles reliever Darren O’Day received a second opinion today on his injured hamstring and is considering whether to undergo surgery that likely would end his season.
O’Day is headed to the 60-day disabled list, which opens a spot on the 40-man roster.
An MRI revealed a Grade 2 tear of the hamstring, which doesn’t always require a surgical procedure.

Pitchers Jimmy Yacabonis and Yefry Ramirez will be optioned to Triple-A Norfolk. Yacabonis will start July 3 for the Tides and Ramirez will follow on July 4.
The Orioles are doing more than just tweaking their roster and pitching staff this afternoon. This is more than just revving up the Triple-A shuttle for another trip up north.
Pitchers Ryan Meisinger and Paul Fry had their contracts purchased today. Meisinger is wearing No. 52 and Fry No. 51.
Get used to it. While winning remains important to the organization, as manager Buck Showalter pointed out again yesterday, the time is ripe to sift through the system and offer chances to the most productive and promising players.
Meisinger, 24, was an 11th-round pick in 2015 out of Radford University. A native of Prince Frederick in Calvert County, Meisinger is 11-7 with a 2.37 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 120 relief appearances and he’s held opponents to a .222 average.
The idea of promoting Meisinger, a fastball/slider guy, gained steam over the past few weeks and he heads to Baltimore after registering a 2.05 ERA and 0.95 WHIP in 15 games with Norfolk. Opponents batted .198, with Meisinger allowing five runs, walking five batters and striking out 30 in 22 innings.
Fry, 25, was recalled in April 2017 and spent two days with the Orioles before they optioned him, his major league debut put on hold. He was outrighted in June.
The Orioles acquired Fry from the Mariners last year in exchange for international signing bonus slot No. 105 and designated pitcher Parker Bridwell for assignment. He’s 19-17 with a 3.09 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 211 minor league games and posted a 3.47 ERA and 1.11 WHIP this year in 13 games with the Tides.
Two appealing qualities: Fry posted a 68.6 percent ground ball rate at Double-A Bowie before moving up to Norfolk, and left-handers are batting .194/.286/.323 against him this season.
Shortly after acquiring Fry, executive vice president Dan Duquette wrote in a text message: “Paul Fry has compiled an excellent record in a short time with a deceptive delivery and a good slider. Our staff likes the way he keeps the ball down in the zone and in the park.”
Fry has allowed only four home runs this year in 42 1/3 innings.
One more move has to be made to create a spot on the 40-man. A minor league player will be designated for assignment.
Update: Bowie infielder Corban Joseph has been designated for assignment.
