That’s eight ejections in this series, and two instances where the dugouts and benches emptied.

Weiland became the first player to be ejected in his major league debut since the Nationals’ John Lannan on July 26, 2007. Lannan hit the Phillies’ Chase Utley, breaking his hand, and then drilled Ryan Howard.

The Reds’ Aaron Boone was the last player to do it before Lannan, in 1997, according to one story that I found.

Meanwhile, the Orioles continue to trail the Red Sox, 7-6, in the seventh inning. They’re 5-for-10 with runners in scoring position today, but they failed to bring home the tying run after putting runners on the corners with no outs.

Update: Felix Pie is pinch-hitting for Guerrero, who’s the second Oriole to leave the game after being nailed in the hand. Guerrero has been diagnosed with a contusion, just like Mark Reynolds.

The All-Star break is coming at the right time.

Update II: The Red Sox completed the sweep of this four-game series with an 8-6 victory.

The Orioles have lost seven in a row and went 1-9 on the road trip. They were outscored by the Red Sox, 32-13, and outhomered 11-2. Boston hit .343, compared to the Orioles’ .219 average.

The Orioles lost two players today because of bruised hands. Their rotation is a mess. And they’ve got a lot of ground to make up when the second half begins on Thursday.
