Orioles manager Craig Albernaz confirmed the order of his rotation earlier today, beginning, of course, with Opening Day starter Trevor Rogers and continuing with Kyle Bradish, Shane Baz, Chris Bassitt and Zach Eflin.
Bradish starts today’s penultimate exhibition game against the Nationals at Camden Yards and Baz is on the mound Monday afternoon in D.C.
Outfielder Taylor Ward is away from the team to be with his wife for the birth of their third child, a boy, who weighed 10 pounds, seven ounces. He’s expected to return Tuesday or Wednesday.
Reliever Keegan Akin and outfielder Heston Kjerstad will undergoing MRIs on Monday in Baltimore. Akin slipped while warming for yesterday’s scheduled appearance in Sarasota, felt some discomfort in his adductor and didn’t appear in the game. Kjerstad injured his right hamstring Thursday while running out a ground ball in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Akin is supposed to be the primary left-handed reliever in the bullpen but might not be ready by Thursday. His absence opens the door wider for Grant Wolfram, who might have made the team anyway after tossing seven scoreless innings with one walk and 12 strikeouts in camp.
“We’ll see the severity of it and where we’re at,” Albernaz said of Akin. “But just like anything in this game, you have to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. With Akin, yeah, if it is an IL came, there’s gonna be some big shoes to fill, but I’m confident that we have guys in that clubhouse who can step up.”
The home side has some lockers set up for players who made the trip from the minors, with some of them sharing space. The Orioles still have 42 players in camp after reassigning pitcher Levi Wells last night and they brought many of them to Baltimore.
“Now it’s someone else’s turn to step up,” Albernaz said, “and I feel like we have the talent and the depth to kind of navigate that tough stretch.”
Outfielder Dylan Beavers was scratched from Friday night’s lineup with right knee soreness. He’s improving and had a light workout day at Camden Yards.
“We’re gonna use these days to get him recovered and kind of see where we’re at on Wednesday,” Albernaz said.
The new videoboard and sound system were unveiled today, along with ribbon boards, the Truist Club behind home plate in the old press box location, and other renovations constructed during the offseason.
“Unbelievable,” Albernaz said.
“I mean, it goes to, the field surface is awesome. Obviously, we appreciate the Rams for fixing their divot, so to speak. They came out great. The new scoreboard is insane. That’s been the talk with all the players seeing it out there. The new sound system, you feel it. The ribbon banners, the club, everything looks awesome.
“This place was already one of those great ballparks, but with the enhancements it just makes it that much better.”
