Nick Markakis got ahead of Yankees starter Freddy Garcia 3-0 with two outs in the first inning. He took a pitch for a strike, and crushed an 86 mph fastball, sending it deep into the seats in right field for a 1-0 lead.

The Yankees have outscored the Orioles, 35-7, in the first inning this season, so Markakis’ blast is a refreshing change of pace.

Matusz has to be careful with Robinson Cano, who’s 7-for-18 with a double, two homers and four RBIs lifetime against him.

Down on the farm, Single-A Frederick placed outfielders Steven Bumbry (wrist) and Kipp Schutz (concussion) on the disabled list. Schutz suffered his injury after flipping over the fence while trying to bring back a home run ball.

Instant update: I didn’t get a chance to publish this entry before Mark Teixeira tied the game with a two-out homer in the bottom of the first.

Yes, two outs. Shocking, I know.

Teixeira jumped on a 90 mph fastball.

Update II: More two-out damage. Alex Rodriguez walked, Cano singled and Andruw Jones singled to give New York a 2-1 lead.
