Rather than announce a roster move that provides a fresh arm to the bullpen, the Orioles are reinforcing their lineup by activating catcher Adley Rutschman from the 10-day injured list.
Catcher Sam Huff was designated for assignment, leaving the 40-man roster with 39 players.
Rutschman went on the IL with left ankle inflammation and was eligible to return today. He’s gone through a series of baseball activities on the road trip.
The injury occurred with Rutschman batting .294/.385/.471 (10-for-34) with six doubles and five walks in 10 games. He’s expected in tonight’s lineup against the Royals.
Samuel Basallo became the primary catcher in Rutschman’s absence and had RBI singles last night in the ninth and 12th innings in a wild 7-5 win.
Huff is out of minor league options. He’s 2-for-9 with a double and five strikeouts.
Shane Baz makes his fifth Orioles start tonight and will try to reduce a 4.91 ERA and 1.545 WHIP in 22 innings.
Baz has faced the Royals twice in his career and allowed seven runs in 13 2/3 innings. Maikel Garcia is 3-for-6 with a double.
Kyle Bradish became the sixth Orioles pitcher last night to allow at least 10 hits but only one run on a solo homer, joining Jamie Moyer (May 25, 1993), Arthur Rhodes (Oct. 3, 1992), Bob Reynolds (April 26, 1974), Wally Bunker (April 29, 1966) and Dave McNally (June 14, 1964.)
Reliever Rico Garcia’s 33 outs recorded to begin a season without allowing a hit match Yennier Cano in 2023 for the longest streak by an Oriole in the expansion era.
Taylor Ward is batting .419 with a .651 slugging percentage on fastballs.
Kansas City left-hander Kris Bubic has a 3.97 ERA and 1.059 WHIP in four starts and has surrendered only two home runs in 22 2/3 innings. He’s walked 10 and struck out 26.
The season so far is up and down with Bubic. He allowed one run and two hits in six innings in his debut against the Twins, four runs in five innings against the Brewers, no runs and two hits with 11 strikeouts in seven innings against the White Sox, and five runs and six hits in 4 2/3 at Detroit.
Bubic owns a 2.30 ERA in five career appearances (four starts) against the Orioles. He made two starts against them in 2025 and allowed an unearned run over 11 2/3 innings.
Leody Taveras, who hit his first career grand slam last night, is 2-for-2 against Bubic, and Ward is 2-for-5 with a home run.
Left-handers hit .278 with an .831 OPS against Bubic in his career and right-handers hit .253/.326/.398.
Maikel Garcia’s 1.009 OPS at home is more than double his .469 OPS on the road.
The Royals have lost eight in a row and own the worst record in baseball at 7-16. They’re 5-6 at Kauffman Stadium, but their rotation has registered a 2.69 ERA with six quality starts.
Kansas City went 5-for-21 with runners in scoring position last night and stranded 16, their most since leaving 19 on base against the Cardinals on June 29, 2016.
The Royals’ 6.37 bullpen ERA is the worst in the majors.
*Upon further review, Weston Wilson really is charged with an error. And this time, they mean it.
Wilson started in left field on April 15 at Camden Yards. He raced back on Adrian Del Castillo’s fly ball, reached for it near the nook at the warning track and saw it deflect off his glove. The official scorer ruled an error and changed it to a triple in the bottom half of the inning.
Another change has spun it back to an error that allowed two runs to score. Castillo loses two RBIs, and two earned runs are removed from Bradish’s line to lower his ERA to 3.96.
