A new day has brought another round of roster moves for the Orioles, including the surprise removal of reliever Tyler Wells.
The Orioles need fresh arms and Wells threw 25 pitches last night over 1 1/3 innings. He also worked an inning Thursday in Game 2 of the doubleheader, which made him vulnerable to being optioned to Triple-A Norfolk.
He’s one of the flexible relievers on the club.
Albert Suárez was designated for assignment after covering 2 2/3 innings last night in a 7-2 loss to the Yankees. Súárez agreed to a new minor league contract after refusing an outright assignment, and he was preparing to join Norfolk yesterday before the Orioles redirected him to New York.
The two openings were filled by reinstating left-hander Dietrich Enns from the injured list and recalling left-hander Nick Raquet.
Enns came down with a left foot infection and hasn’t pitched for the Orioles since April 3. He’s allowed two runs and two hits with five walks and seven strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.
Raquet has appeared in two games and allowed three runs and three hits in 1 2/3 innings.
The Orioles need a starter for Sunday and right-hander Trey Gibson is on the taxi squad. He’s joined the club in New York, with the expectation that he’s making his major league debut.
MLB Pipeline and Baseball America rank Gibson as the organization’s No. 3 prospect. He’s made six starts with Norfolk and posted a 4.01 ERA with 25 strikeouts in 24 2/3 innings.
Shane Baz is pushed back to Monday, which created a rotation opening on Sunday.
Kyle Bradish makes his seventh start today. He’s registered a 4.20 ERA and 1.733 WHIP in 30 innings.
The walks are challenging Bradish. He’s issued 17.
Bradish has a 3.09 ERA and 1.400 WHIP in seven career starts against the Yankees. He’s allowed six earned runs in 20 innings in his four starts in the Bronx.
Aaron Judge is 1-for-9 with three walks and three strikeouts against Judge. Ben Rice is 3-for-5 with a homer.
Rice hit a three-run homer off Cade Povich last night. Povich allowed five runs and seven hits in four innings.
Yankees left-hander Ryan Weathers, traded by the Marlins in January, has a 3.21 ERA in six starts. He’s struck out 40 in 33 2/3 innings.
Weathers has never faced the Orioles.
The Orioles are 0-6 against left-handed starters this season.
