Manager Buck Showalter explained what happened to Stu Pomeranz, who will undergo a MRI at 10 a.m. tomorrow in Baltimore while the Orioles prepare for their game in Toronto.

“Looks like he pulled his oblique while warming up,” Showalter said. “He’ll have an MRI in the morning, and we won’t take him with us. I’d say there’s a better than average chance he’s…The Orioles have lost back-to-back series’ for the first time this season, and they just lost a reliever to an oblique injury.

“Looks like he pulled his oblique while warming up,” Showalter said. “He’ll have an MRI in the morning, and we won’t take him with us. I’d say there’s a better than average chance he’s going on the disabled list. That’s unfortunate. We’ll deal with it.

“I got a phone call (in the dugout) and couldn’t figure out what they were calling back for. Must have been some static on the line. Then I said, ‘Rick, (Adair) you can answer that,’ because that’s usually not a good phone call.

“That’s frustrating because he’s a good-looking young pitcher who’s pitched well this year. Could help us. Hopefully it won’t be too long, but I would be surprised if it wasn’t a DL. He’s going to stay back and the MRI’s in the morning at 10.”

Asked if the Orioles could add a position player, Showalter replied, “Depends who we add. We can do that or add a pitcher. We can go either way. We were discussing it a little bit before I needed to come down here.”

Showalter was hesitant to place much of the blame for today’s 4-2 loss on starter Brian Matusz.

“I think it’s more the inability to mount much offensively, he said. “I think Brian pitched well enough. He kept us in that ballgame, kept us in striking distance. Overall, it’s a competitive outing.”

The Orioles went 2-4 on the homestand, and they’re now in a first-place tie in the American League East after Tampa Bay’s victory in Boston.

“We’ve got a tough row,” Showalter said. “The whole season is. We’re going to Toronto, and I’m sure they’re not real happy, and they’ll be recharged going home. On to Tampa and on to Boston. That’s why this is hard to do.

“We’d like to play a little better at home. There were some games right there for us. We’d especially like to have won today with what we were celebrating. It was a special day at the ballpark with the military here. But you walk through that tunnel every day and see what the game has in store for you. We’ll make adjustments. We’re going to get some of our people back. We’ll take it as it comes.

“It’s frustrating for our guys, and we’ll put it behind us and move on to another country.”
