Mark Reynolds committed his eighth error of the season, and his second at first base, when he mishandled Daniel Nava’s bouncer leading off the inning. Pitcher Jason Hammel was late covering first, but he never got the chance to find out how late.

Mike Aviles squirted a single into left field, and Nava scored when Reynolds fielded Scott Podsednik’s bunt and threw to third, where Steve Tolleson allowed the ball to deflect off his glove for an error.

Reynolds originally was charged with the error before a scoring change hung it on Tolleson. The ball should have been caught, so it was the correct ruling. However, Nava would have been safe. Reynolds must get the out at first base.

Aviles scored on Dustin Pedroia’s sacrifice fly to center field – Matt Wieters couldn’t make the catch and sweeping tag – removing the rest of the Orioles’ lead.

Hammel struck out Kevin Youkilis to end the inning after issuing an intentional walk to David Ortiz, who was 6-for-12 lifetime against the right-hander before tonight.

Hammel has seven strikeouts in five innings.

The Orioles regained the lead in the top of the sixth on Wieters’ leadoff double, Reynolds’ bunt single and Steve Pearce’s sacrifice fly – his first American League RBI.

Orioles 3, Red Sox 2.

I can’t imagine that the Red Sox were looking for Reynolds to lay down a bunt.

Down on the farm, Brian Roberts has two doubles,an RBI single and two runs scored for Triple-A Norfolk.

Zach Britton has allowed four runs and seven hits in five innings, with two walks, one strikeout and one home run. He’s thrown 77 pitches, 44 for strikes.

Update: Troy Patton gave up two runs in the bottom of the sixth after replacing Hammel, who allowed two unearned runs and four hits in five innings, with three walks and seven strikeouts. Hammel threw 106 pitches, 61 for strikes.

This ties Hammel’s shortest outing of the season.

Aviles, the Red Sox’s No. 9 hitter, is 3-for-3 with an RBI single. His last hit tied the game, and Podsednik gave Boston a 4-3 lead with a sacrifice fly.

SCORING CHANGE: Nava is now credited with an infield hit in the fifth. No error on Reynolds. That means one run off Hammel is earned, and he’s credited with five hits allowed.

Update II: Unless the official scorer changes his mind again, the Orioles lead the Red Sox, 6-4, in the seventh.

They scored three runs, the first charged to Jon Lester before he left the game. Endy Chavez, Robert Andino and J.J. Hardy had consecutive singles, the last two off Scott Atchison. Reynolds gave the Orioles a 5-4 lead with his second hit of the night, and Pearce followed with a single for his second RBI.

It’s been a strange game, folks, and it’s not over yet.

Luis Ayala will replace Patton, who just struck out David Ortiz for the first out of the bottom of the seventh.
