LaRoche, Span get night off as Nats face Kershaw

LaRoche, Span get night off as Nats face Kershaw
LOS ANGELES - Adam LaRoche and Denard Span both get the day off with the Nationals facing Cy Young Award favorite Clayton Kershaw tonight at Dodger Stadium. LaRoche's back has been bothering him and he's considered day-to-day after leaving Monday's game with tightness. Span isn't in the lineup for the first time since Aug. 13. The Nats center fielder had played every inning of each of the 18 games since, but he is 0-for-5 in his career against Kershaw. With those two not starting, Bryce...

Some morning notes and quotes

Some morning notes and quotes
LOS ANGELES - The division lead is back to seven games. Only 26 games remain on the Nationals' schedule. You can do the math. The Nats' magic number is now down to 19. When is it appropriate to start talking about what a division leader's magic number is? I asked a fellow reporter that question last night. He said when the magic number dips below 20. I say when the calendar has reached September. Both of those qualifications have now been met. Any combination of 19 Nats wins or Braves...

Williams on the homer barrage, LaRoche's back and more after 6-4 win
LOS ANGELES - The longball barrage continues. The Nationals pounded out four more homers tonight - this after hitting 40 home runs in August - and hung on to a shrinking lead late, taking the opener of a three-game series agains the Dodgers by a 6-4 final. Denard Span ripped two homers, giving him three in his last five games, and Jayson Werth and Asdrubal Cabrera also went yard, giving Gio Gonzalez a solid lead to work with. Gonzalez went six-plus innings, allowing three runs on three hits,...

Nationals continue West Coast swing in Los Angeles (with Dodgers lineup)
LOS ANGELES - September is here, meaning that rosters have expanded. The Nationals have taken advantage of the expansion already, calling up six players to join them here for the series opener vs. the Dodgers. The Nats are probably sad to see August go. They went 19-10 last month, outscoring opponents 135-95. Gio Gonzalez is on the mound tonight. In August, he pitched to a 2-3 record with a 3.77 ERA. For the Nats: CF Denard Span 3B Anthony Rendon RF Jayson Werth 1B Adam LaRoche SS Ian...

The Nats will add right-handers Aaron Barrett and Blake Treinen as well as left-hander Xavier Cedeno to the bullpen. Additionally, catcher Sandy Leon, first baseman/outfielder Tyler Moore and outfielder Steven Souza Jr. were added to the roster. Souza was activated from a rehab...

Outfielder Alejandro De Aza reports to Orioles; left-hander T.J. McFarland optioned to Aberdeen
The Orioles today announced that outfielder Alejandro De Aza, acquired Saturday night, will report to the team today. To make room on the 25-man roster, left-hander T.J. McFarland has been optioned to Short-Season Class-A Aberdeen. De Aza, 30, batted .243/.309/.354 (96-395) with five home runs, 31 RBI and 15 stolen bases in 122 games for the White Sox in 2014. He will wear uniform #12. McFarland, 25, was 4-2 with a 3.10 ERA (52.1IP, 18ER) in 30 games (one start) for the Orioles.

Roark going for team-high 13th win

Roark going for team-high 13th win
SEATTLE - Right-hander Tanner Roark goes for his team-high 13th victory this afternoon as the Nationals try to sweep the Seattle Mariners in a three-game series. The last time the Nats swept the Mariners was in June 2011. After sealing their 12th win in 13 games, manager Jim Riggleman shockingly resigned, upset that general manager Mike Rizzo wouldn't discuss an extension of his one-year contract. No chance of that happening today. Matt Williams will get on the plane to Los Angeles. At 20...

Jayson Werth: "I want to win another championship. I want another ring"
SEATTLE - Jayson Werth made the postseason with the Dodgers in 2004, four years in a row with the Phillies from 2007-2010, then again in 2012 with the Nationals. He made it to the National League Championship Series in 2010. He won an NL pennant in 2009. He got a World Series ring in 2008. No shortage of accomplishments there. Yet, here's what Werth said last night after the Nats increased their lead over the Braves to seven games with 28 games left in the regular season: "I think we got a...

Williams on Strasburg's gem in Nats' 3-1 win

Williams on Strasburg's gem in Nats' 3-1 win
SEATTLE - After one of his worst outings of the season, Stephen Strasburg delivered quite possibly his best. Strasburg went 7 2/3 innings tonight, allowing just one run on six hits, striking out eight and walking none. He dominated the Mariners through the middle innings, kept his pitch count low and led the way for the Nationals, who snagged their second straight win here in Seattle, this one by a 3-1 score. Jayson Werth hit a two-run homer in the first to give Strasburg a cushion, and...

Nats lineup features both Ramos, Lobaton

Nats lineup features both Ramos, Lobaton
SEATTLE - Fresh off his two-homer night, Wilson Ramos is back in the Nationals lineup. So is Jose Lobaton. How is this possible? Ramos is serving as the Nats' designated hitter, a role he's manned only once in 298 career games. His hot bat stays in the lineup and the Nats get to take advantage of starting pitcher Stephen Strasburg's 2.94 ERA with Lobaton behind the plate. For the Nationals CF Denard Span 3B Anthony Rendon RF Jayson Werth 1B Adam LaRoche SS Ian Desmond LF Bryce Harper DH...

Nats get to the King

Nats get to the King
SEATTLE - The guy on the mound had allowed more than three earned runs in a start just once all season. In that one outing, he had allowed four earned runs. The guy on the mound had a 2.07 ERA. The guy on the mound had never given up four homers in an outing. The guy on the mound is considered an overwhelming favorite for the American League Cy Young. And the guy on the mound got clobbered. Baseball is a weird game, folks. You can get stymied by an underwhelming pitcher one night, then hit the...

Williams discusses Nats' six-homer night in 8-3 win

Williams discusses Nats' six-homer night in 8-3 win
SEATTLE - So much for that great pitchers' duel we were all expecting. The Nationals hit four of their six home runs tonight off Felix Hernandez, who entered tonight's game with a 2.07 ERA on the season and had never allowed four homers in an outing in his career, and rolled to an 8-3 win in the opener of this three-game set. Wilson Ramos homered twice, and Anthony Rendon, Jayson Werth, Ian Desmond and Bryce Harper also left the yard for the Nats, who tied a team record with those six...

Werth DHing, Schierholtz will play right

Werth DHing, Schierholtz will play right
SEATTLE - The Nationals will get to utilize the designated hitter for the next three days, and Jayson Werth will handle that role tonight. Werth will be in his normal No. 3 spot in the batting order, but will not roam right field here at Safeco Field. Nate Schierholtz will play right, getting his first start as a National. As I wrote earlier, we'll get a very strong pitching matchup tonight: Jordan Zimmermann (9-5, 2.93 ERA) will square off against Mariners righty Felix Hernandez (13-4, 2.07...

Another test, this time out west

Another test, this time out west
SEATTLE - Hello from the great Northwest, where the weather is lovely, the seafood is tremendous and there is practically a Starbucks on every single corner. I had heard that coming in - that coffee shops were all over the place here. But you seriously cannot walk half a block in Seattle without seeing coffee sold somewhere, and Starbucks logos can be spotted pretty much everywhere you go. After a much-needed day off yesterday, the Nationals get back at it tonight, hoping to snap their mini...

LaRoche returns in finale against Phillies (plus programming reminder)

LaRoche returns in finale against Phillies (plus programming reminder)
PHILADELPHIA - Adam LaRoche is back in the lineup in his normal spots at first base and clean-up for the Nationals in the finale of a three-game against the Phillies. LaRoche was out of last night's starting lineup, getting a rest while he nursed a tight back. Otherwise, the lineup looks very familiar in support of right-hander Doug Fister (12-4, 2.38 ERA) against Philadelphia's Kyle Kendrick (6-11, 4.93 ERA), who owns the National League's worst ERA (6.10) since June 22. A programming...

Given more consistent at-bats, Frandsen heating up in August

Given more consistent at-bats, Frandsen heating up in August
PHILADELPHIA - Being a bench player is never easy. The inconsistent playing time, the tough late-game match-ups against hard-throwing relievers, the lack of live pitching to build timing before at-bats - it's all part of the gig, and it all makes the gig difficult. Add in the frustration that can build (and sometimes fester) when you don't succeed in your very limited opportunities, and it becomes mentally taxing as well. Imagine only having maybe three chances to come through for your...

Hearing from Williams, Frandsen, Desmond and Gonzalez after Nats' 4-3 loss

Hearing from Williams, Frandsen, Desmond and Gonzalez after Nats' 4-3 loss
PHILADELPHIA - In a game that was seemingly filled with close, questionable calls, the Phillies got the benefit of the doubt on a few key ones, and they escaped with a hard-fought 4-3 win. The Nationals battled back from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game in the top of the eighth on Asdrubal Cabrera's solo homer. But the Phillies won a challenge in the bottom of the eighth, when Kevin Frandsen's foot was ruled to be just off first base and Ben Revere was called safe upon review, and then they...

Harper, LaRoche out of lineup against lefty Hamels
PHILADELPHIA - Bryce Harper and Adam LaRoche will not start tonight against Phillies left-hander Cole Hamels. Kevin Frandsen will get the start at first base and bat eighth while Scott Hairston will start in left field and bat sixth for the Nationals. Hairston is batting .386 with five doubles, five homers and nine RBIs in 44 career at-bats against Hamels. Gio Gonzalez will face Hamels. Gonzalez is looking to build on his last start in which he pitched seven scoreless innings and only...

Rendon keeps on rolling deep into his first full big league season
PHILADELPHIA - It will go down as a solo homer in a 3-2 loss, but Anthony Rendon's sixth-inning longball got the Nationals back into last night's game and added to what has quietly been a really strong first full big league season. After last night's action, Rendon now is hitting .276/.336/.461 on the year, with 17 homers, 69 RBIs and 93 runs scored. He's played in 126 of the Nats' 130 games, trailing Ian Desmond by one for the team lead in that department, and his 563 plate appearances...

Williams, Harper and Ramos discuss Nats' 3-2 loss to Phillies
PHILADELPHIA - The rally magic couldn't quite carry the Nationals tonight. The Nats trailed by two runs entering the top of the ninth, and they looked like they might be piecing together another late comeback when Wilson Ramos homered with two outs and Asdrubal Cabrera delivered a pinch-hit single to extend the rally. But Nate Schierholtz grounded out sharply to short to end the game, handing the Nats a 3-2 loss in the opener of this three-game set. Here are reactions from the clubhouse...
