Major League Baseball will announce its 2026 Silver Slugger Award winners on Nov. 17 and Pete Alonso has a chance to repeat at first base.
Alonso is the lone Orioles finalist after earning the honor last year with the Mets. The Red Sox’s Willson Contreras is the other first baseman in the American League.
After signing a five-year, $155 million contract, the second-largest in franchise history, Alonso played in all 161 games and batted .267/.363/.522 with 24 doubles, 43 home runs, 113 RBIs and a 5.0 fWAR. He led the AL in homers and RBIs and was the unanimous winner of the Most Valuable Oriole Award.
Contreras, in his first season with the Red Sox, batted .275/.386/.516 with 21 doubles, three triples, 27 home runs and 81 RBIs in 130 games.
Alonso is a finalist for the fifth year in a row. Chris Davis is the last Orioles first baseman to win the Silver Slugger in 2013.
Cal Ripken Jr. holds the franchise record with eight. Outfielder Anthony Santander is the most recent winner in 2024, after Gunnar Henderson (utility) and catcher Adley Rutschman in 2023.
Outfielder Mark Trumbo won it in 2016 and outfielder Cedric Mullins ended the drought in 2021.
Alonso also has a chance to become only the ninth player to win in both leagues in back-to-back seasons.
The White Sox have four different players named finalists, the most in the majors. They’ve had three since 2021.
Louisville Slugger introduced the award in 1980. Finalists and winners are determined by a vote of managers and coaches. Each team receives four votes.
A combination of offensive statistics are considered, including OPS, OPS+, home runs, RBIs, batting average, total bases and runs. Also, the managers’ and coaches’ general impressions of a player’s overall offensive value.
