PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – Making his second Orioles start of spring training this afternoon, right-hander Andrew Casher held the New York Mets to a run through five innings as New York leads Baltimore 1-0.

The Orioles were blanked through their first five at-bats by Mets righty Jacob deGrom. Making his second spring start, he fanned eight O’s in the first five innings, allowing just one hit. That was a single by Austin Hays, who then stole second base in the third.

baseballs-in-bin-sidebar.jpgCashner, who pitched four scoreless innings versus Philadelphia in his debut on Sunday at Ed Smith Stadium, allowed one hit in two scoreless frames to start today’s game.

But after Cashner fanned the first two batters of the third, he yielded a two-out double to left by Asdrúbal Cabrera. A Jay Bruce RBI single to right followed for the 1-0 lead.

Through five, Cashner allowed four hits with no walks and three strikeouts. His fastball ranged between 91 and 95 mph. He allowed some solid contact, but several well-struck balls were turned into easy outs by the defense. So Cashner has allowed just one run in his first nine innings for the Orioles.

Edgin on to pitch: Left-hander Josh Edgin replaced Cashner to start the last of the sixth. So Cashner’s numbers above through five innings are complete. He’s allowed just one run in two starts covering nine innings for his new team. After throwing 63 pitches today he went to the bullpen to get in more work.

The O’s scored twice in the sixth off Robert Gsellman to take a 2-1 lead. Tim Beckham homered to right for a 1-1 tie. It’s his third this spring. After a Colby Rasmus two-out walk, Manny Machado lined a double to right. Rasmus scored when Bruce misplayed the ball. No RBI for Machado.

It’s a tie: The Mets tied the game in the eighth off Donnie Hart, but Anthony Santander’s two-run homer in the ninth gave the Orioles a 4-2 lead.

James Teague allowed two runs to score in the bottom of the ninth, the tying run coming in on his wild pitch.

The game ends in a 4-4 tie.
