Gausman had too many deep counts tonight, which inflated his pitch total. He was sharper in his previous start against the Athletics, when he gave up one run in seven innings, struck out six and threw 102 pitches. He didn’t have a clean inning tonight, but he kept making big pitches when needed.

He kept showing why he should stay in the rotation if the Orioles are able to make room.

Do they stall by giving Miguel Gonzalez one more start on his injury rehab assignment?

Two quality starts against two first-place teams. Can’t ignore it.

FOXSports.com’s Jon Morosi, who’s here tonight, tweeted the following:

Brian Matusz retired the Blue Jays in order in the seventh, and the Orioles continue to lead 3-1. Ryan Webb is warming in the bullpen.

Update: Nick Markakis doubled in the seventh to score Jonathan Schoop, who led off with a double, and give the Orioles a 4-1 lead.

Markakis takes over sole possession of seventh place on the club’s all-time hits list with 1,453, leaving him two behind Ken Singleton for sixth.

The Blue Jays scored a run off Webb in the eighth on Jose Bautista’s double and stolen base, and Edwin Encarnacion’s bouncer to the mound.

Update II: Game over. The Orioles move three games above .500 with a 4-2 win over the Blue Jays.

The Orioles have won two straight and three of four. They trail Toronto by 3 1/2 games in the American League East.

Kevin Gausman improved to 2-1 with a 3.71 ERA. Zach Britton picked up his sixth save.

The Orioles are 15-15 at home and 6-7 in two-run games.
