masn-baseballs-orioles.jpgWASHINGTON – The Orioles returned left-hander Pedro Viola to Double-A Bowie without recalling him, but they’ve summoned two more minor leaguers.

As first reported by The Sun’s Jeff Zrebiec, Triple-A Norfolk pitcher Brad Bergesen and infielder/outfielder Blake Davis are heading to D.C.

Bergesen could be recalled and start Tuesday if Jeremy Guthrie goes on the disabled list, or he could give the club another long reliever in the bullpen while Alfredo Simon’s on the disabled list.

Bergesen could be recalled and start Tuesday if Jeremy Guthrie goes on the disabled list, or he could give the club another long reliever in the bullpen while Alfredo Simon’s on the disabled list.

Davis would allow the Orioles to option Ryan Adams to Norfolk, rather than keep him on the bench while Robert Andino gets the bulk of the starts at second base. Adams has cracked the lineup only six times.

Davis has mostly been a middle infielder, but he’s also played the outfield with the Tides. The Orioles have an open spot for him on their 40-man roster.

Bergesen is 2-1 with a 1.64 ERA in three starts for Norfolk after being optioned on May 28. He was 1-6 with a 5.36 ERA in 10 games with the Orioles, including nine starts.

Davis is hitting .284 with five homers and 24 RBIs in 49 games for Norfolk.

Meanwhile, Derrek Lee just singled in the second inning, making him 18-for-36 lifetime against Nationals starter Jason Marquis.

Update: Lee doubled with one out in the fourth, making him 19-for-37 against Marquis, and he scored with two outs on Robert Andino’s bouncing single into left field. Lee should have been out by a mile, but Wilson Ramos couldn’t handle Jerry Hairston Jr.’s throw.

Zach Britton followed with his first major league hit and RBI on a double into left-center field.

Orioles 2, Nationals 0.

Britton has looked good in the cage during batting practice, and he sure looked good on that swing. There was nothing cheap about that hit.
