SARASOTA – The Orioles have moved past their first off-day of spring training and will play a fake, fake game that doesn’t really count, an exhibition against Team Netherlands at Ed Smith Stadium.
You’re going to recognize reliever Kenley Jansen, infielders Ozzie Albies, Xander Bogaerts, Didi Gregorius and Sharlon Schoop, outfielders Jurickson Profar, Ceddanne Rafaela and Druw Jones, and catcher Chadwick Tromp, the former Oriole who’s already faced them twice this spring with the Braves.
Hall of Famer Andruw Jones is the manager, and Orioles legend Jair Jurrjens is pitching coach.
Reds Dominican Summer League left-hander Ryjeteri Merite is starting for Netherlands. The Orioles are starting left-hander Trevor Rogers, who has tossed five scoreless innings with two hits, no walks and six strikeouts in his two Grapefruit League outings.
Rogers fits into the impressive category in camp, which we expected.
Not as many people anticipated that outfielder Heston Kjerstad would be 6-for-14 with a double, home run and only one strikeout. He’s been barreling baseballs since the first batting practice session, hitting to all fields and looking like, well, a player selected second overall in the 2020 draft.
Kjerstad doesn’t have a clear path to the Opening Day roster, perhaps needing an injury to a teammate in order to avoid an option to minor league camp. Dylan Beavers also hits from the left side and plays the outfield corners, and unlike Kjerstad, he’s able to back up in center field.
Beavers has three hits in 14 at-bats, all of them doubles. Two were stroked Sunday afternoon in Fort Myers. He’s struck out six times, but he’d really need a poor spring to lose his roster spot.
Tyler O’Neill left camp to play for Team Canada in the World Baseball Classic after a sizzling start at the plate, with seven hits in 11 at-bats, including a double and home run, and no strikeouts. He just needs to stay healthy. The rest should take care of itself.
Manager Craig Albernaz will figure out how to get at-bats for O’Neill, Beavers, Taylor Ward and Colton Cowser.
Catcher Samuel Basallo singled, doubled, walked, drove in two runs and scored two in Sunday’s game against the Red Sox. The single was 109.5 mph off the bat. The 380-foot ground rule double to right-center field, with just a flick of the bat, was clocked at 99.4 mph. The strength is special.
Albernaz didn’t want to hear the word “injury” when asked about Basallo in the media scrum. He emphasized that removing Basallo on Thursday was his decision and done for precautionary reasons after the young catcher’s lunging tag at the plate that created some discomfort on his right side.
Coby Mayo had a hot September and carried it to Sarasota. He’s 6-for-12 with two doubles and no strikeouts. Just keep running him out there at third base.
Two players quietly impressing in camp are utility candidates Jeremiah Jackson and Weston Wilson. Jackson is 5-for-13 with a double and no strikeouts, and Wilson is 4-for-8 with two doubles and four walks.
Jackson might have the upper hand because of the impression he made on the club last summer, but Wilson remains in the running. They need to instill trust defensively, and Jackson is getting plenty of chances at second base, a position he didn’t play for them last season.
Pitching stats don’t mean as much for the guys getting ready for the season. Chris Bassitt was charged with two runs in two-plus innings Sunday, one scoring after he left, but he went sinker heavy – 23 of his 40 pitches – and didn’t want to show a division rival too much.
Left-hander Grant Wolfram needs a good camp to break it as a third left-hander in the bullpen, and he’s struck out six batters and allowed one hit in 2 2/3 scoreless innings.
Tyler Wells is reminding everyone how much the Orioles missed him. He’s tossed three scoreless innings with one hit and five strikeouts. He can be a real weapon at the back end of the bullpen.
Rico Garcia also has turned in three scoreless innings, with no hits and four strikeouts. Anthony Nunez and Cameron Foster, two of the dark horse candidates, have matched his scoreless innings.
Predicting how the Orioles will construct their bullpen is made harder by the possibility of a late waiver claim or trade. A free-agent signing is less likely at this point, but president of baseball operations Mike Elias isn’t necessarily done making moves.
We also don’t know whether it’s a seven- or eight-man ‘pen. The assumption is eight relievers and five starters, but who knows?
*MLB Pipeline released its top 30 prospects list for the Orioles and Basallo and Beavers are 1 and 2, as expected. Outfielder Nate George, 19, went from unranked to No. 3.
Not quite as expected but deserved.
Pitchers Luis De León and Trey Gibson are 4 and 5, respectively.
Ike Irish, Wehiwa Aloy, Esteban Mejia, Aron Estrada and Enrique Bradfield Jr. round out the top 10.
Here is the entire list.
