Contreras joining Orioles' active roster Wednesday, tonight's lineups

The Orioles summoned right-hander Roansy Contreras from Triple-A Norfolk today and placed him on the taxi squad.

The visit will last more than 24 hours.

Interim manager Tony Mansolino needs a starter for Wednesday night and said Contreras is going to pitch “a good amount.” The exact role is undetermined, but another roster move is lurking.

Contreras could start or work in bulk relief behind an opener.

“A lot will kind of depend on how we go through today,” Mansolino said.

The Orioles selected Contreras on waivers from the Reds on Jan. 10 and from the Yankees on Feb. 7, and he’s earned an opportunity by posting a 3.73 ERA in 28 appearances (14 starts) with Norfolk. He’ll work on regular rest Wednesday after allowing one run Friday in 3 2/3 relief innings against Charlotte. Contreras also came out of the bullpen Aug. 13 and allowed one run and two hits in four innings in Jacksonville.

In his last five appearances, Contreras has held opponents to six runs over 23 innings. He hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2024 with the Angels, when he appeared in 37 games. He spent parts of 2021-24 with the Pirates.

Kyle Bradish makes his first start tonight since June 2024 and becomes the 64th player used by the Orioles. Contreras will be the 65th, and reliever Shawn Dubin can be the 66th when he joins the club.

The Orioles claimed Dubin on waivers from the Astros today and he hasn’t reported.

“I liked that one,” Mansolino said. “We saw him a couple times here recently with the wrap-around series against Houston. He’ll come out of the bullpen for us and, like the rest of the mix, we’ll lay eyes on him, kind of see what he does. And there’s opportunity here. He could pitch leverage, he could pitch length out of the ‘pen. Just gonna kind of depend on how he does and how the other guys are doing, but we’re excited about him.”

Samuel Basallo is playing first base tonight, with Coby Mayo at designated hitter. Dylan Beavers returns to the lineup and is in left field. Jeremiah Jackson is batting second and playing right field.

Colton Cowser moves up to the cleanup spot after homering in three of his last four games.
