Eveland, acquired from the Dodgers on the last day of the Winter Meetings for Jarret Martin and Tyler Henson, went 0-1 with a 4.73 ERA in 14 appearances with the Orioles, including two starts. He cleared waivers twice this summer – he didn’t pitch for the Orioles after July 13 – and accepted outright assignments rather than forfeit the rest of his salary.
Eveland was 5-5 with a 2.79 ERA in 14 starts at Triple-A Norfolk. He held Gwinnett to two earned runs in six innings in his final start on Sept. 1.
Paulino began the 2012 season as Matt Wieters’ backup while Taylor Teagarden remained on the disabled list, but the Orioles weren’t satisfied with his work behind the plate. His conditioning also came into question after he reported late to spring training. His car, however, arrived on time.
Paulino hit .254/.266/.302 with three doubles and five RBIs in 20 games with the Orioles, and .287/.341/.380 with nine doubles, a home run and 15 RBIs in 40 games with Norfolk. He also accepted an outright assignment this summer on July 14, the same day that Eveland was designated for assignment, when the Orioles activated Teagarden from the DL.
Making his Orioles debut on April 7, Paulino went 4-for-4 with a double and two runs scored against the Twins. He collected seven hits in his first 13 at-bats over three games, but ended up 16-for-63 before the Orioles designated him.
Baseball America’s Matt Eddy first tweeted the news on Eveland and Paulino earlier today.
Notes: Wei-Yin Chen was included on Baseball America’s All-Rookie team for 2012.
Chen joined the Rangers’ Yu Darvish, the Brewers’ Mike Fiers, the Diamondbacks’ Wade Miley and the Athletics’ Jarrod Parker among starting pitchers. Chen made the most starts of the group with 32. His 193 innings are two fewer than Miley’s total and two more than Darvish’s total.
Also, Eddy reports that the Orioles signed outfielder George Barber to a minor league contract. Barber’s entire professional career consists of seven games with the Angels’ rookie-league affiliate in 2010.
