Jackson Holliday is trying again with his latest injury rehab assignment.
Holliday is playing tonight at Double-A Chesapeake against the Altoona Curve, his first game since striking out in the first inning on April 21 at Triple-A Norfolk and departing with pain in his right hand. Holliday is batting second and serving as designated hitter.
The recovery from February hamate bone surgery has been slower than anticipated, with Holliday shut down twice. He appeared in 11 games with Norfolk before the Orioles arranged to have the hand reexamined, appeared in two games at High-A Frederick and had one at-bat with the Tides.
Overall, Holliday is 9-for-51 (.176) with three doubles.
An MRI and CT scan and X-rays came back clean, and Holliday kept working out at Camden Yards before reporting to Chesapeake. He’s hitting and participating in fielding drills.
Holliday made his Double-A debut on July 14, 2023, becoming the first 19-year-old to play for the Baysox since Manny Machado in 2012. He hit .338 with a .928 OPS in 36 games and was promoted to Triple-A Norfolk on Sept. 5, 2023.
The Orioles can sweep the Marlins with a win tonight in Miami, which would improve their record to 18-20 heading into their weekend series against the Athletics at Camden Yards.
They’ve scored 16 runs in the past two games after tallying 15 in their previous five.
Pete Alonso has a seven-game hitting streak. He’s 9-for-25 with four doubles, three home runs and eight RBIs.
“I’m just happy I’m contributing, starting to feel like my normal self,” Alonso told the media last night after belting a three-run homer in the first inning. “I feel like I’m doing a good job of shutting down traps. I feel really consistent in my swing. Mechanics feel good and that’s the thing, just taking quality pitches and capitalizing on ones that are in the zone. So I feel pretty good right now.”
Taylor Ward has drawn a walk in 13 of his last 14 games, totaling 21 over that span. He walked three times last night and scored three runs.
Chris Davis was the last Oriole with three walks and runs scored in the same game on June 1, 2016 versus the Red Sox.
Ward has scored three runs in back-to-back games, becoming the first Oriole to do it since Gunnar Henderson from June 20-21, 2024. Roberto Alomar is the only player in team history to accomplish the feat in three straight, from July 25-27, 1996.
Ward, who’s the designated hitter tonight, ranks third in the majors with 34 walks, two behind leader Mike Trout. Ken Singleton holds the club record with 118 in 1975. Ward’s .434 on-base percentage also is third. Ben Rice is first at .455.
Samuel Basallo is catching and Adley Rutschman is sitting. Dylan Beavers is in left field, Colton Cowser is in center and Tyler O’Neill is in right.
Coby Mayo is the third baseman and Jeremiah Jackson is at second.
Left-hander Cade Povich is making his fourth appearance and third start. He’s posted a 4.41 ERA in 16 1/3 innings.
In his last outing, Povich faced the Yankees in New York and allowed five runs and seven hits in four innings. He’s never faced the Marlins.
Right-handers have hit .271/.341/.452 against Povich in his brief major league career, and left-handers have hit .271/.332/.482.
Marlins right-hander Max Meyer has a 2.68 ERA and 1.027 WHIP in seven starts. He’s allowed 25 hits and struck out 40 batters in 37 innings.
Meyer, the third-overall pick in the 2020 draft out of the University of Minnesota, hasn’t allowed an earned run in his last two starts over 12 innings. He tossed seven scoreless with one hit surrendered in his most recent outing against the Phillies.
The Orioles haven’t faced Meyer. Alonso is 2-for-4 with a home run against him. Ward is 1-for-2 with a double.
