The Orioles are trying today to claim their 28th series as they conclude their visit to Arizona.
Ryan Mountcastle has returned to the lineup after missing the past few games due to an illness. He’s batting cleanup and playing first base.
Anthony Santander was hit on the right hand last night in the ninth inning, left the game and underwent testing, and is serving today as designated hitter.
Two positive developments before the first pitch is thrown.
Aaron Hicks, reinstated from the injured list today, is in left field. Ryan O’Hearn is the right fielder. Austin Hays is on the bench.
Gunnar Henderson stays at shortstop.
Jack Flaherty is making his fifth start with the Orioles. He’s allowed 14 runs and 21 hits in 19 2/3 innings.
Flaherty is 0-2 with a 4.13 ERA and 1.042 WHIP in four career starts against the Diamondbacks over 24 innings.
The Orioles lead the second-place Rays by 2 ½ games.
All-Star right-hander Zac Gallen is 14-6 with a 3.32 ERA and 1.096 WHIP in 28 starts. He’s struck out 182 batters in 173 1/3 innings.
Gallen registered five consecutive quality starts last month before allowing six runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings at Dodger Stadium. He surrendered four home runs, doubling his total over the previous five games.
Gallen has never faced the Orioles. James McCann is 0-for-7 with four strikeouts against him.
McCann is on the bench today.
